My friend asked me to be Godfather to his daughter. I'm thinking of giving an ipad but part of me says to give cash so they can save it for the child. Where I live Christening gifts these days are money, usually spent by the parents on things the household needs for the baby. These people could not afford a smartphone or idevice so I am thinking it might help them more than cash. Cash is spent on food an is gone in a week. I gave the other two kids a pc and a laptop last year, but the mom uses the laptop. Savings bonds are useless like 1% per year even compounded for 18 years you won't profit much on a small bond. Any good ideas? No, I am not giving them a bible or some crucifix. Maybe a 50" tv? They still have a small tube TV they use.
A TV would be a nice gift, you could also give the kids money and they could use on what they wish (my god parents do this).
That's some serious shit right there. Where I come from, presents from godparents are more in the $50 range, if at all. It's like a very distant relative who is there, but doesn't have much financial obligations. Cultural difference I suppose.
My sisters goddaughter played around with idevices from an early age on and I feel it really helped her development. She is now four and plays Zelda on SNES. But for the first two years the ipad would be useless and when she finally can use it it will be super old. So I would say the ipad is a great gift but wait until she is a little bit older. From an emotional perspective you could gift a big high quality plush toy. You know the kind of plush toy she cuddles when she had a bad dream and will keep forever.
Gotta be the TV. Something they can all get around at the same time and get enjoyment out of is the way to go in my opinion.
For some reason I thought this was going to be about something horrible (found horsehead in bed...) Congrats Kevin, that seems like quite the honor. The TV seems to be a good choice - they already have a laptop you gave them and let's be honest - an iPad becomes outdated faster than anything.
