Ok, here I go, trying to figure out if there are any good games for the ol' 3DO bastard that match my taste. I'm a fan of arcade ports as well as classic simple game concepts, but I'm open to anything. To be honest I'm already quite familiar with most of the lineup so I you don't need to make a list particularly for me (but maybe for public preservation?), my intention for the thread was to find out if the ports are any good because I'm new to the 3DO sector and don't know much about the actual quality of the games except for "some say they're good". But some also say Jaguar games are great fun. I played 15+ titles on the Jaguar for 2 hours, they're not fun (except for all the FPS's). Well, here's a list I came up with from the top of my head, maybe someone can confirm if it's a good port/original game or a bad version I should avoid. Doom Street Fighter IIX (well, I actually do know that it's great) Wolfenstein 3D Road Rash Need for Speed Novastorm Anything else I should get, just in case I'd get a 3DO soon? What about that Japanese title named "Autobahn", what genre is that, is it any good? I'd love to have a title called Autobahn, I'd probably put it next to my Kraftwerk LP collection :love2: What about stuff like "Strahl", is it playable or entirely Japanese? And what's the best 3DO hardware? I'm fancying an FZ-1 for the looks, but is it better than the cheap-looking FZ-10? What about a Sanyo 3DO, are there any benefits in owning one of those?
What about Wing Commander III? Sure, it has a lot of of FMV but the game is great...and the FMV scenes have Mark Hamill.
Well, the Sanyo TRY 3DO is one sexy console, you don't want any other 3DO if you ever get one, trust me! It is also compatibel with the Panasonic FZ-EM256 Memory Unit and the the FZ-FV1 Video CD Adaptor Unit (requires some skill to hook that up though) As for the games, I recommend Flashback, Gex, The Horde, Iron Angel of the Apocalypse, Lost Eden, Lucienne's Quest, Psychic Detective (interactive FMV), Road Rash and Zhadnost.
Doom for the 3DO is a garbage port (opinions may differ), though the sound track is really something.
You know I'm looking right at you... BROTHER! Anyway, Escape from monster manor is kinda fun. it might be the worse fps i have ever played, but its still worth a blank cd-r. also, Stellar 7 is pretty damn awesome. it is the prequel to Stellar Fire on the Sega CD (Stellar Fire BTW has the best traditional soundtrack to any gave i have ever played in my life) oh, and DOOM on the 3do kicks ass. forget what APE says, he is just a hater
About Strahl, it had a US release that's in English. I don't remember enough about the gameplay to recommend it with any confidence, but I do know my copy has western copyright information and was bought in a standard game store that didn't usually do imports. As far as hardware goes, the FZ-10 is more reliable and has a built-in memory manager. The FZ-1 is clunky and prone to breaking, although the hardware that's still working today is probably immune from the laser lens failure that affected so many launch systems. When I go to play Guardian War or CPU Bach, I generally hook up the FZ-1.
I enjoyed 'Hell'. Google that one and see if that's up your street. Its very of it's time but it has a great voice acting cast. Another was Dr Hauser's Mansion (alone in the dark clone) That was cool. Oh, and Megarace... So 90's LOL
Personal favourites Need for Speed, Road Rash, Return Fire, Gex & SSFIIT Can't believe nobody mentioned Return Fire yet Some more good ones: Another World, Out of this World, Fifa Soccer, Flashback, Twisted the Gameshow, Samurai Showdown & Total Eclipse And for a good laugh: Way of the Warrior! Also something to remember, the world's worst game ever: Plumbers Don't Wear Ties.. it's so bad you have to see it to believe it!
From what I've heard, the FZ-1 is the unit that is the most compatible with all of the games aside from the very few games that require the kanji font to be on the system ROMs (I think the Japanese version of Alone in the Dark is one of them). I've also heard that the FZ-10 and Sanyo Try systems aren't as reliable. I've only had the FZ-1, so I can't say if there's truth about what's said about the other systems.
I've been offered a super-minty Japanese FZ-1 and although I never fancied the 3DO in any way, it's hard to refuse a sexy gal like that when she's willingly laying there. Kinda nerdy comparison here, but you know what I mean... so it's alright if I buy the FZ-1? There's nothing preventing me from getting a Sanyo 3DO later, so I might get it someday. So the 3DO is regionfree, right? I can play cheesy American FMV games on the Japanese hardware? Can't wait to try "Plumbers don't wear ties" and all the other great stuff 3DO has to offer. By the way, were there any 2D-games released for the 3DO? Like platformers? Except for Gex I might add.
The 3DO is region free but if memory serves the American NTSC version of Crash and Burn doesn't play on a PAL console. I remember wanting to buy it and the importer I used at the time warned me of problems. As for 2D platformers, apart from Gex I can only remember Soccer Kid and Johnny Bazookatoss, sorry, Bazookatone. Soccer Kid is a generic but fun little game but the other fucker is an absolute piece of dogshit not even worth wasting a cd-r on.
Unfortunately, the 3DO is really lacking in good 2D action games, and in general the library has too many FMV games and XTRREEEEEME 90s crap like Cyberdillo and PO'ed for my tastes. Still, I didn't remember that Policenauts was on 3DO, that's an obvious one if you know Japanese and there's also a version of the PC classic Star Control 2 with a great CD soundtrack.
I also quite liked Space Hulk: Vengance of the Blood Angels. I played that to death back in the day. Decent FPS. And there's also the 3DO version of 'D'.
3DO is sort of region free. However, if a Japanese title requires the Kanji character set that is in the Japanese 3DO ROMs, it will not run on a non- Japanese 3DO unless the developer of that game has also included the Kanji font on the CD-ROM Luciennes Quest and Blue Forest Blue are probably the best RPGs the system has to offer. There's also a really quirky bizarre RPG called Grand Chef that's worth at least trying.
There also was a really good D&D RPG, don't remember the name though. And my FZ-10 never hiccuped once, runs like a charm - don't know where that "unrealiability"-mythos came from. Fifa Soccer is also a blast with a few friends (that was the first "3D" Fifa game btw.) Also, you need some Ballz! (just for the name of it)
