thinking of getting a new DVD player since my old one is starting to give in, figured i might aswell get a proper one. so it has to have DVD-R capabilities, be regionfree, has to have an internal HDD for recording, HDMI out would be nice along with VGA and component.. easy computer access to the HDD.. uuh anything else? any good models to look out for and where to buy em, any to avoid etc etc.. rock'n'roll!
I'd check out Panasonic models. I havn't been 'in touch' with the home theatre scene in Europe since last year, but I know that Panasonic's models were held in high regard, especially if you need a digital tuner as well. http://www.panasonic.se/servlet/PB/menu/1249175_l15/index.html That's Panasonic's top of the range recorder in Sweden right now. I don't know if it can be made region free (but most can), but it has HDMI and a big HDD.
availability in actual stores isnt an issue, i have no gripes with importing one (especially since the $ is so low  ) i have been looking at panasonic models, very sleek stuff!, however it seems hard to get a region free one and i feel generally they dont seem to support many movie formats (wmv, avi etc) ?? am i just looking at the wrong ones?
I've got a cheap $30 phillips that will play divx and hasn't misstepped on a disc i've used with it yet. I know they have higher up models with hard drives in them but I don't know how much they cost. Some have usb ports on them and theres some website that tells you how to hack most of them to be region free fairly easily but i forget where it's at currently.
hmmm the KISS DP 1500 looks lovely I must say. http://www.kiss-technology.com/?p=dp1500 But the DP - 558 http://www.trustedreviews.com/multimedia/review/2005/07/26/Kiss-DP558-HDD-Ethernet-DVD-Player/p1 Looks great too. After my KISS DP - 1000 died on me some time ago, I have been thinking of getting a new DP from KISS. Since I have had nothing but good time with it, when it worked. But now it is a dead piece of shit. But this piece of machinery looks great. KISS is a high quality product, and it is probably the best DVD player I have ever had, and well I think I will buy me a new one from KISS. And yes they also have DVD harddrive recording in the DP - 558 if I remember correct. But the price is not cheap. But if you want to spend about 200 US dollars (give or take a few bucks) or more , then KISS technologies are smashing great .
i agree that KISS looks fantastic, ill definetly look it up, $200 is well within my pricerange too, thanx for the tip! for cheapo DVD player my old Nextwave is king, it takes everything, all computer formats and its absoluteley loaded with high quality ins and outs.. sadly no DVD burner tho, and mine is starting to give up with PSU problems.. nextwave do not seem to manufacture DVDplayers anymore either or else id buy a new one in a heartbeat, think they retailed at $30-40ish aswell.
Just to point out, the DP - 558 costs 200+ UK pounds, but still spending about 1000 Danish kroner for a DP - 1000 was not a bad deal, when I bought my old one. And they can run a lot of great video formats. aka. divx xvid and some other formats like mpg mpeg and video CDs too(can´t remember exactly all the formats but those I mention it could play). And you could view jpg pictures on it, and it played MP3 files and wma.
you you have an xbox360 with composite or hdmi it work WONDERFULLY! it upscales really well and have cristal clean video out.
not bought a dvd player in a while, last one i bought was ages ago and was a sony DVP-CX850D and never had a problem with it except that it is mamoth in size which makes finding a decent unit that would fit it was harder than you'd expect. I have heard newer sony models with hdd's are pretty good as one of my friends bought one a while ago and never had problem with it yet.
I know it doesn't have a HD, but I figure I'd mention it anyway - in Holland and Belgium (but probably in the rest of Europe as well) Lidl regularly carries Silvercrest-branded players (first the 65xx, now DP-53xx/DP-54xx) that are generally well received. I have a DP-5300 and I must say it's the best 44e I ever spent! It has an USB port and a card reader, plays every DivX/Xvid I throw at it, has analog 5.1 outputs (rare in this price segment) + RGB SCART + component or even HDMI/VGA (not on my model, but the 6515/5400 do), both optical & coaxial digital output, it finds that slipper that's been at large under the chaise lounge for several weeks, it makes excuses for unwanted lipstick on your collar, it's new, it's improved, it's the only product you'll ever need...
Is KISS outsourcing the DP brand ? or what ? I mean, it is strange hearing other brands having the DP in their name.
As AntiPasta said check out stores like Lidl they seem to usually have some player that can do everything including waffles
If you're gonna spend $200 US on a DVD player just snag a Toshiba HD-DVD player and be done with it. -hl718
mm yeah.. if i "just" wanted to play DVDs i wouldnt really have to buy anything, i already have a small army of different electronic devices that can do that. what i want is a high quality player to substitute for consoles, computers and god knows what unspeakable things i have under my TV.
My mum has a panasonic DVD-R/VCR, which she loves and finds very easy to use..and embarrassingly knows how to use it better than I do! If you're in the UK it has Freeview built in, which means it'll actually still be useful in 5 years when its all turned off. Can't understand why anyone would buy an analog one, but they seem to... Back to the point, If their HDD recorders are as good I recommend them.
To be honest get any of the cheaper ones that have HMDI and upscaling and they are great Mr bro got one from a local supermarket for about £25 and it is really great, not worth really spending mega doshs, unless you go hd/blu ray, but then the disks are still large money
