I just picked up SF3:Online Edition for PS3. I really enjoy the online play BUT the PS3 controller is horrible for SF3. It isn't great for SF2 or SF4 for that matter but I really notice it in SF3. I need a better controller. I am not big on arcade style joysticks and definitely prefer a pad. If the cost isn't too much I would consider an arcade style joystick. There is the Street Fighter IV pad and it looks pretty decent but reviews seem all over the place.

Anyone have or know of something better?

Supposedly you can use a USB Saturn pad with the PS3. If that's true, it'd be the best choice after a stick, since the Saturn pad is basically the best ever.

I bought the Street Fighter IV Fighting pads (Madcatz, I think) for the Xbox 360, and I've been quite satisfied with them. Not the best DPad ever (the PS2 ones were quite superior to these) - But they are quite comfortable, and very good for fighting games, at least for me.

There is a PS3 version, and I think it's in fact more common than the 360 version that I've seen here. I recommend those.

I don't play fighting games often, but once I used the USB Saturn pad I never went back. I found it to be awkward in 3D fighters such as Soul Calibur, but it is near perfect when playing 2D fighters. It'll take a match or two to adjust but once you do, you'll never have an easier time spamming Hadoukens. (unless of course you have a controller that lets you map special moves to a single button)

Unfortunately, there aren't any official Sega Saturn pads on ebay right now. (do NOT buy a third party pad. I've never used one, but I've heard they're stiff and cheap.) If you can wait a little while, you can see if any reappear on ebay, or even try asking if anyone here has one they'd sell. If you need a controller right now, then go ahead and get the Hori pad. To me, the D-pad looks a little cheap but I've heard many good things about Hori pads, so I don't know.

I have always liked the Saturn pad for fighting games so maybe I can get a Sega Saturn pad USB adapter. Not sure if that would even work on a PS3 but my PS2 to usb works fine on it. I will have to look more into this.

And here it is. The consensus seems to be that the best fighting game pad is something from 15 years ago. I miss you Sega.

Ok, so I ended up buying a USB adapter from this place.

It looks like they are all hand-built and they have USB adapters for other random systems too.

Why? Get an official Saturn USB pad instead. Sega made official Saturn PC pads that are just perfect. Just be careful about getting ones off ebay from china (most likely clones).

Because official ones go for 40.00 plus. Generics are all over the place but those are cheaply made.

With an adapter, I can atleast
1)use a real Saturn pad, which I already have many of.
    2) and if a controller breaks, I can just use another controller.

You also run the risk of the converter not being all that good and introducing input lag. ^_^ (I have some friends who are super nuts about 2d fighters)

Considering how expensive the damn controllers are, I'd say brainpann made the right choice. The only site I've found that has them sells them for $60. As much as I love my Saturn USB controller, I think that is a ridiculous price; especially since (minus the USB) it is exactly the same as a regular Saturn controller, which can be found for under $5.

Sure the adapter may have minor input lag, but considering the price, it shouldn't be too bad. Plus, it is nice to know that if the controller malfunctions, you don't need to spend $50+ on a new one since you can just grab any Saturn controller and use that instead. SEGA always made great hardware, so you probably wouldn't even need to worry about that.

I emailed the maker of the Saturn USB adapter and asked him about input lag but have not yet received a reply. I am not that worried though because it seems to be that he mostly makes these for fighting game enthusiasts. That's a good sign.

How does everyone here feel about the NeoGeo pad? I like the idea of it but have never actually used one except on the NeoGeo pocket, but that was 10 years ago. Is the Saturn pad still better? I found a PS2 NeoGeo pad and am considering buying it as well.

So while waiting for the Saturn pad to USB adapter, I purchased the "PS3 Versus Controller" off amazon.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0051MQK6K/ref=oh_o04_s00_i00_details

I was intrigued by it because it had micro switches in the control pad, much like the NeoGeo pad. The reviews were ok but some complaints about it breaking after a short period. What the hell, I thought I'd try it anyway.

After coming from the PS3 digital pad, it was a breath of fresh air. Moves were actually being executed and I wasn't playing SF3 like a spaz...well, less like a spaz :)

The buttons are nice and responsive and the irregular shape of the controller allows for "piano playing". The control pad is nice because you can feel and hear the clicks. It definitely feels like something between an arcade stick and a control pad. My only critique is that the pad requires more pronounced movements. This causes your movements to be slower than they could be if the pad was a little more sensitive. I am sure with a little more time and practice, a person could get very used to it.

Overall, it is a very good pad and worth the money.

    BUT THEN!!!

My Saturn pad to USB adapter came in.
I was a little worried that after using the PS3 Versus Controller, I would not be accustomed to the Saturn pad anymore.

    Wrong!

Just like riding a bike. While playing SF3, moves are executed almost flawlessly. :) Dashing backwards is no problem, something I have a little trouble with using the PS3 Versus Controller. I won't write a review for the Saturn pad because it has been around so long. It really is one of the best, if not the best, fighting pads. Ever. There is no noticeable lag in the USB adapter and I am REALLY glad I bought it. Since the adapter seems to work so well, I am going to invest in a Hori Saturn pad because the face buttons are the same size.

If anyone is interested, here is the link for the place I bought it.

No, I am not affiliated with the website. Just a satisfied user. :love2:
