So I've got this rather spiffy 286 sitting here. 384k of extended ram whoo! Aside from the PC version of Starflight can anyone recommend some good games that will run well on it?
I loved Sim City "classic" as the modern iterations call it. Getting a serial mouse to work will be a tad difficult due to the fact it's got a 5.25" drive and my 486's dual drives sometimes like to act up, that is unless DOS6.22 has the ability to run a serial mouse without additional software. Been years since I've dealt with hardware this old.
I had a 386 SX back in the day and many a hour was spent on the old Apogee 2D jump 'n runs. Stuff like Duke Nukem, Commander Keen, Secret Agent and Crystal Caves. Man, those were good games.
Ah the good ol days, where anti-piracy methods involved making you typing in random words from the instruction manual! (most written in a way that couldn't be photocopied easily too) Commander Keen was good back in the day, not sure if it will run on the 286 though :S
Yeah, I hated that too since I lost my POP manual quite a few times. So I end up playing the first level alot and barly played any other level. Was funny tho, One time I was able to randomly guess the right word and got though.
don't know if Psycho Pinball would run on a 286 as I had a 486dx2 when I played it.. it has to be the best pinball game I've ever played
http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1629 this thread here could help you alot. So maybe the moderators should move this thread to offtopic, and maybe make the old thread a sticky in offtopic as I suggested so long ago ?
Well, a lot of DOS games will run OK. Monkey Island for sure! All the original Sim games were floppy based (city, far, ant, life etc). Broken sword miight play on it, and other similar games.... 7th Guest, Ace Ventura etc. Oh, and it'll probably play DOS-based emulators too, heh. As for a mouse, don't you have a driver included in your config files anyway? I have a LOT of DOS-based games. When I go home, I'll try to dig them out and give you some ideas.
No way that 7th Guest runs on a 286, I remember having trouble playing it on my 486... Stunt car racer will work, and shufflepuck cafe too, but the amiga versions are way better!
A lot of floppy games had that kind of anti-piracy methods, when you get one you would have to get a copy of its manual too...
Wolf3d SOD uses the "use the manual to play the game!" method. Some of the questions are easily answered if you have the smallest knowledge of ID and Apogees history.
