I am really amazed by my new Apple computer and most of the applications - but iTunes remains a big piece of shit to me.
I used to use Foobar2000 on my Windows PC for playing MP3's, but it's not available for Snow Leopard. Can anyone recommend a similar MP3 program that's easy to use and excludes all the shit that iTunes throws at me? :)

I just use VLC it's boring but it's got a lot of codec support and is really light weight. :) I use it for both my Windows 7 computer and my linux netbook, it's worth a try anyway:

The link below is for the Mac OSX version:

    Songbird?

I avoid VLC like the plague.

iTunes isn't that bad on Mac from my experience though - the Windows port is just dire.

I personally like VLC. It's lightweight, cross platform and does everything you need in one deployment.

Try Songbird, it's highly customizable via plugins, it's open source and uses the Mozilla platform, so stablilty and bugs are not problems (by my experience, Winamp 5.5 and all versions I tried of iTunes for Windows were nothing but a huge bug).

Songbird looks ace. Just importing my music, let's see how that works... VLC is my standard video player but I think its MP3 player function is a little circumstancious. Foobar2000 was excellent, easy to use and offered lots of infos about each song on minimum space, I love it. Just a same there is no OS X version around!

If Foobar2000 is open source, you could always compile it for your native platform.

Am I missing something with iTunes? Why do people dislike it so much? I've been using it for so long though. It keeps all my music in a big list and plays it.

Itunes is a library of your music, how the hell can you dislike it? It does what it needs to do and everything you don't need you can just disable.. The OS X version is great, I really don't see the problem people have with it.

I was going to say "get crossover or wine or whatever and run Foobar anyway" but... hah... nevermind.

Yeah, iTunes on Mac is really awesome. The Windows version, not so much.

I'm in th exact same spot. Got me a macbook pro some week ago and the only things I'm missing from windows so far is foobar2000 and windows live messenger (this mainly because I want to keep my chat logs). still haven't found anything to replace them with =/

The Mac version of Windows live messenger does also keep chat logs and I'm fairly sure Adium does too.

Adium keeps logs, and is without a doubt the best messenger for OS X.

I don't know much about imports, but Adium keeps logs. Rightclicking on the desired name opens a menu which includes an option called "Show saved conversations".
It's way better than viewing logs w/Miranda btw, the program I used prior to Adium on Windows..
