I have/had Nanostray which as we should all know was developed in Germany.I think it's too slow and trying to be Raiden/Raident silvergun......and failing

Ageis Wing on XBLA was free.....and free is about what it's worth. I like to support Indy developers/interns at big publshers. But Ageis Wing was pretty blah and SLOW.

Do good Post Defender Non Japanese Shmups even exist?

X2! (PSX). Also, Tyrian, Raptor (both PC), this one game on CD32 I can't remember, and probably a whole lot of other Amiga stuff.

Xenon 2 and Tubular Worlds, both on PC and Amiga.

Xenon 2 is actually pretty turd if you take away the Bomb the Base sound track. Play the Mega Drive version and you'll see what I mean

I remember Tyrian was quite good, but was incredibly easy. Likewise with Raptor, minus the good part...

To be honest I don't think there are any good ones...

I dunno about you, I didn't find them to be 'incredibly easy'. By the way, here is a list of Amiga shmups.

Llamatron! and is sequal revenge of the mutant camels, both awesome games (apart from the crappy remake on the p.c a couple of years ago)

aside from that, there are a few gems on the amiga, spectrum, atari, and even on the old nes and mastersystem that were made in europe

That new game on PSN is good. I only played it briefly though. Super Stardust (original games on the Amiga were also excellent).

Jeff Minter's shooters are excellent, he has some PDA demos you can test out on his website (http://www.llamasoft.co.uk/) - or at least, he used to. Tempest 2000/3000 are amazing and Gridrunner++ is great.
