hi guys , thanks to everyone for your replies and help. I have contacted the second hand shop and im waiting for a reply , also i have a 90 day warranty. There is a Toshiba Service Center close to me i hope they will let me take it there and they pay the bill , either way id like to get it fixed as it is quite a nice Laptop.

i do think its a ribbon cable in the way or broken hinge as mentioned here by members , i have taken a photo of the maximum i can lift the monitor.

Having been a laptop service tech, it is most likely that the hinge has broken inside the base. If you rock it back, it will open but it may also break
the plastics. The missing plastic in the air vent tells me it had a side impact, and the mount may be broken, and there may be plastics inside the cooling fan as well.

Return it for credit at the second hand shop, it seems like a lemon.

Exactly. The plastic is what breaks.

From that photo, is the keyboard out of place?! Seems odd - the P870 should have a Macbook-like recessed keyboard.

It is highly unlikely that the shop will agree to foot the bill of a repair with Toshiba - likely to be in the hundreds of Dollars. That's why one company continually sells the base plastic needed for $92 on eBay. A third party repair would be unsatisfactory as I said, because they have to remove your labels to do a proper job... and they are never going to adhere the same again... if they can even get them off in one piece.

Personally, I'd take it back for a refund and buy a decent new laptop. 90 day warranty is terrible.

That slightly bent part with crack also suggests side impact which can mean not only broken hinge or base but damaged PCB, or loose ball on any BGA chip - it can work fine until it will heat enough to lose contact, not to mention potential HDD problems.

When you take it back, try to have discreet video recording in case someone there tries to open the laptop by force. Then share that video! :D

A new laptop would definitely be for the best in the long run. But don't let this discourage you from buying second hand in the future. Just be sure to give a thorough look over and testing before buying a used one.

I wish I could help you out, laptops are so cheap int he u.s. $179 for a decent one from asus.

It's not uncommon to see tourists buying ten at a time.

you've already been invaluable ASSEMbler , identifying the side impact on the vents and other things in your posts. I got my eye on a new Laptop here in Oz i just want to see it reviewed first as it came out late 2015.

I have the G750, which is near enough the same thing. 8Gb RAM sounds pretty low for those. Decent machines, but don't carry it about still plugged in, as it's a very expensive mistake if you drop it like I did! It doesn't look quite as heavy duty as mine... the spec is there, though.
