GoW....first impressions

    I actually sort of dig the fact that the battle dynamics don't drastically change.....it feels like I'm fighting a real war. Variation is certainly nice in games, but I think that in some cases it can be to the detriment of realism and immersion.

    At any rate, the human assault rifle is the BEST assault rifle ever from an FPS, it makes Halo's pale in comparison. Great long range ability, usable grenade launcher, etc...., feels like a real M16A2.

    The Halo1 assault rifle was, without a doubt the worst weapon ever! accuracy was subpar, and you needed like 40 bullets to kill a elite, and thats if you dont miss a shot, cuz if you do you'll barely destroy his shield, and while reloading he will charge at you and pWn your ass with a melee attack.

    About immersion, I would like to see a game that really brings the misery of real war to VGs, as movies like platoon, apocalypse now and The thin red line brought it to hollywood.

    Ah yes, now I know what you are talking about. In many areas where there are ledges, it doesn't want to let you dive off the ledge. Instead you are stopped by some invisible wall and you have to "hop" down. It is very annoying but you learn to live with it.

    But other than the games few quirks it's really great. Really lag is the main source of the game's annoying things. Forinstance the host can have an ungodly advantage with the shotgun if they are a good player. Likewise if you are lagging badly you can have a huge advantage with shooting, but a strange advantage with melee attacks. One of these examples is that you used to (they fixed it) be able to tag someone with a grenade from quite a distance if you were lagging enough.

    Unfortunately till everyone has connections to each other that are under 100ms, it'll be annoying. One thing I've noticed is that it seems to only take 1 player with a really bad connection to screw up everyone. I played a few games with the same host never a problem and then all a sudden we had a really laggy game. Some guy left and suddenly it was ok again.

    Even that's too much for me. I'm referring to old-school arcade games for the most part. Not too many companies putting them out right now. I'm quite into playing for score/clear right now. Cave's latest, Mushihime-sama Futari is kicking my ass, but it's fun.

    Ya, i agree that it was immersive, without counting all those bugs and glitches, but the game still was near from completion when it shipped. Heck, the first level is intense and fantastic, but it degrades at a terrible speed.

    In CS:Source, jumping causes movement to slow down when you land from the jump. It's not like Quake 3, where you jump to survive (unless you're playing de_dust2 and running past the doors of near the CT spawn site :lol:

    Unreal Tournament is one of those games were lots of players rapidly jump, dodge, double dodge, crounch, and generally spaz out to avoid being shot. On the one hand it's very annoying, but on the other hand it doesn't stop the game from being fun. It's really really funny when they accidentally fall down and kill themselves. =)
