I'm looking to buy a GP32 very quickly (going on holiday) and was looking at the Gamepark site and the GBAX site... Can anyone who has one give me any thoughts before buying one? 1. Is there are significance going for a 166 rather than 180Mhz? (I know it's faster - doh!, but what does it mean in practical terms today) 2. I assume the Blu is to do with the backlit capability. 3. I'm looking to run mainly Spectrum games and maybe C64 stuff....any thoughts worth mentioning? (size of ram card, emulators etc?) Any other thoughts are most welcome... I need to buy it on afternoon of Monday 25th (GMT), so any quick advice would be cool!.. Thanks
You might want to hold off until Antipasta returns, I know he was having some troubles with getting his to do what he wanted. He may have some advice that could save money/sanity
. I believe this thing is made by Korean company? Funny none of my old mates in Seoul seem to know about it? As I will be in Seoul later year anyone know where I can pick one up? I know there's electronics/computer super mall near parliament house? Interesting place - kind of remind me some HK arcade but more clean and well organised. Last time I picked up couple of DVD backups and apparently you can get cracked full WinXPPro for like 10000 won if you ask certain someone near the subway train station... cheers
Ah korea! I always wanted to go. What's the attitude to americans in korea? They don't hate us do they?
I have FLU overclockable to 166 mhz, and I love it :smt040 I bought it at gbax who I can defently recommend, especialy if you are in europe, great service. I even called them at one time, and got to speak whith a very professional lady. 1. I don't know, but I can feel a difference between 133 and 166 for sure. In practical terms today it doesn't mean very much, as very few of the emus support the 180 mhz feature.. But if the BLU and therefore 180 mhz become the standard in the future.. There is a hack of the snes emu opensnes9x that supports 180mhz, and I find that very interresting!.. 2. Yes. I think the main advantage of the BLU (Back Lit Unit), is that it doesn't wash out the colors, which the FLU does a bit (Front Lit Unit) also I have been told that there is no trapazoid effect. Con, It sucks the life out of the batteries a bit faster. I dont know how fast exactly, as people are of different opinions on the matter.. 3. Don't know about Spectrum games.. But I play a lot of C64 (I always have :smt023 ) There is an emu which is a port of the emu frodo. It is compatable whitch about 3 out of 5 games in my opinion.. the general consensus is that it i compatable with 3 out of 4 games though, but that is not my experience.. Apparently the incompatability has to do whith some hacked games throwing the emu off.. The c64 roms fill nothing, so you could have a million games on it. The thing is to make a couple of c64roms folders, whith no more that 50 roms in each folder. Because otherwise the emu takes forever to scan the c64roms folders for some reason.. The only thing I wish with the emu is that it would have savstate feature, is doesn't and that sucks in my opinion. Other people say the don't mind that as the c64 newer really was big on saving anyway, and the games are easy to pick up and play.. (I'm nnot sure whether it is being worked on or not, but I haven't seen an update in a long time..) And yes, I'd defently go with the 128mb cart, as you can obviously have more stuff on it, but mainly you can also put i whole full leght film on it (the program GPcinema is now free to download and works great). You could also f.eks. put a lot of emus and roms + a couple of episodes of futurama on it.. works great :smt040 The Ideal is to have two 128mb cards, one for emus and one for films.. One things is, don't by the card where you by your gp32 (gbax, lik sang or whatever..) as they all overcharge.. Another good idea is to by a cardreader which really speeds up the proces of tranfering files to it. Overall I think the gp32 emulates the 8 bit consoles perfectly. genesis and snes are comming along, whith a lot of games already full speed whith sound at 166mhz. There are also a couple of great ports for it, like scummVM (plays alot of the lucasart games such as Monkey island 1,2 and 3 and Day of the Tentacle. And there is a brilliant port of doom) It's great for playing games/waching films on the go, and really Just messing around whith. I hope that answered all of your questions (in time) Sorry for all the typos, I din't wanna spelling check it all..
If you still want some advice... 1. Well, it is really random whether if you can overclock your GP32 or not. The BLU units apparently have a higher chance of overclocking, and Lik-Sang is a good place to get them. 2. Yes, the BLU is backlit like a Game Gear, and the FLU is frontlit like a GBASP. Unfortunately I got mine back when there wasn't even FLUs, so I have no internal light. But units without the light are really good outside, and if you're short of money. 3. If you are planning to emulate old computer systems, you will find you have a lot of space to store ROM/disk/cassette images. Keep in mind you will probably want to get a 128MB SMC (the highest amount the GP32 will accept). If you get a lower amount, you might be kicking yourself later. I sadly don't play my GP32 very much anymore, but I think it is very overlooked, and under-rated.
Korea's general attitude to americans is the same as any other asian country: To rip us off and take our money.
