Any of you with access to the Japanese Wii Virtual Console should check out Gradius Rebirth under the WiiWare section. It cost 1000 points but well worth it. Basically it's a high resolution Super Famicom game is a way. What you get are HD back drops such as the stars and so on with all sprites being in SD or a fake SD since Konami have even added scan lines! The look is something like a very high end Super Famicom game but with a few more advanced effects. The audio also kicks arse and again very simmilar to what a SFC would produce but more beefed up. Konami have even added in some fake slow down for that true retro feel  Yakumo
It's an all new game so it falls under WiiWare. Yes, there's classic slowdown and I have no idea if there will be a US release. There probably will though. Yakumo
High resolution? Looks like upscaled, regurgitated shit to me. http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/gradius-rebirth-announced-for-wiiware/
That screen shot looks like crap. The game doesn't looked upscaled because all the main back drops are a different resolution or at least they look modern while the main scrolling background seems to be scan-lined. The actual ship looks pre-rendered too which adds a nice little touch. It's also in true wide screen which is a bonus. Still in the options you could always change the screen setting to anything you like. Yakumo
So it is a completely new game and not a remake of something? What's it like compared with other Gradii? More Gofer or more Gaiden in there?
SEE WHAT YOU STARTED CAPCOM!!!!!!! *shakes fist* new gradius, Mega Man 9 Now since Konami is following this trend Capcom started how about a new castlevania done in the 8 bit style?
What about releasing games on hard mediums again? I hate the thought that stuff like Gradius Rebirth will vanish when WiiWare cuts the support for whatever reason someday. This download shit gets me crazy now that there are newly developed titles that I'd actually like to get.
Yes Nintendo have a great record in keeping downloadable services alive. But still it will be at least 3 to 5 years after the Wii is dead.
Unless I'm missing something, you can't lump these two together. Mega Man 9 is meant to look old school (same engine?, graphics, and all that shit). Gradius Rebirth is mixing old with new, which never turns out good: high res backgrounds on low res sprites (but which are of coursed stretched) always look awful. Any number of Capcom's fighting games do this, as do SNK's recent one. Unforgiveable for a new, full package release. I guess redrawing a bunch of sprites for a 1000 yen download isn't such a slap in the face. The worst offender in this category is the "HD" version of Super Puzzle Fighter. It will be sometime... that's the point.
but you can back up the wii stuff to SD cards, right? Then just dump the SD card's contents to a PC's Hard Drive. The problem is that they need to be played back on the same Wii they were downloaded on :crying: Yakumo
If you play it on hard then yes. On normal you loose all the power ups but are instantly given the chance to get them all back by collecting the power icons. One problem I found is that the game is too short but for wat there was I'm quite happy. After all a new shooter to play for only 1000 yen is fine for me. Got Alien Crush Returns last night for WiiWare as well. That's cool and will probably last a lot longer than Gradius to be honest. Yakumo
So they took the Salamander system in order not to shock todays typical casual gamer who is getting desperate after his second try to beat a boss in Assassin's Creed. After everything what I've heard, I'm not really in awe of what is waiting for me as a loveless file in the cyberspace. Though I'd probably enjoy it (I even enjoyed the MSX versions)... Is it actually a remake of some stages or completely new stuff? Does it play more like Gradius 1/2/3 or Gaiden/V/Generation? I think I asked it before, but there was no response and I'm too much Gradius-fan to resign before I got an answer ;-)
Cheers for the heads up yakumo, i was interested in this but had no impressions to go on. Last one i got was space invaders get even, thats a fun little game, think gradius is my next game. Thanks to the homebrew channel & the region changer app i can play wii/gc games from any region & go shopping on any of the vc shops in the world. Sure the vc & wiiware stuff is locked to each region but you just switch it to play them. Homebrew is coming along at an amazing pace for wii.
