Just got this little gem. 360 mexican pesos (like 32 dollars). Looking at the credits... even Sakimoto (Of FFT, BOFDQ and RS fame) is there.... Is it the same staff that made 'silvergun? or the same staff that made Ikaruga (minus Sakimoto, who didn't write that OST), for that matter? Wasn't Axelay (another great gem of shooters) the last Treasure-developed konami shooter? I really hope this (Old school shooters in new-school machines) becomes a regular occurrence. :smt023
Yes it has some of the Silvergun staff on it, and it is the best shooter since silvergun. It really is an absolutely stunning peice and one that had me hooked for weeks, still trying to beat the expert modes. It is one helluva addictive title!!I'm sure you will love it. :-D
It's asskickingly hard, especially in the harder modes, yes. But the lights are preeeetty.... It's not abusive-hard like recent dreamcast concoctions, like Psyvariar 2 or Border down, but some other kind of nail-biting solid hard, like some shooters were, back in the day. (Not that I' don't love Psyv2 and BD, though. Especially the soundtracks. ) Not sure it's the best shooter since 'silvergun, though. Aren't we forgetting Einhänder and R-Type Delta? But then again, I am glad with my purchase, really worth all the pesos I gave for it (and as a cathedratic college professor, I make 150 dollars a month, so believe you me, spending in my collection IS risky) Why isn't squenix making new shooters, DAMMIT! ?? I'd love to see that...
Yeah, for anyone who's a shooter fan, there's no reason why you shouldn't own Gradius V - pawn your cat if money is an issue, this game is seriously awesome. It is nearly frustratingly hard, however, to go through the first three levels on one credit and then have your remaining 9 taken from you by midway in level 4 as you're trying to navigate seemingly unbeatable areas... My roommate has fared a little better than me, and it is absolutely amazing when you unlock the Edit Mode - not only can you mix around ship powers from the current game, but Gradius staples such as the barrier shield and ripple laser become available as well.
I still can't get over Cave's latest few shooters. ESPGadlua, Ketsui, and Mushihime-sama which is still in beta. The latter takes some getting used to, but is nonetheless beautiful.
