Grandstand Light games was an earl cartridge based system. The very curious about this game is that is capable to project games into the wall. In fact it has no his own screen.

There are at least 3 versions for this Game System: Grandstand Light Games, Playtime Light Games and the italian clone Mega Video Game. (probably some more clones)

I own 2 of these system boxed and i was searching the game list that , based on the back of the games themselves includes some games grouped in series like ADVENTURE and SPORTS.

This is the full game list , with all the titles and all some titles from one system version and some others from another system version so you can see how they look:

The strange thing here is the game BASEBALL. It doesn´t appear on any of the rest of the games case as a part of the catalog. In fact the case of this came looks very different and i never seen before i bought it, and ignored existence. See the back of all the games to note that:

Look in detail how strange look this case and different from the usually GRANDSTAND boxes and the MEGA VIDEO GAME boxes:

And this game mentioned the rest of SPORTS GAMES.. but the other games never mentioned BASEBALL ??????

So, we can say LIGHT GAMES catalog is 13 games.

LOL love the box illustration, lol no way in hell is a single torch bulb going to produce a projection that bright. However it is still a quirky & interesting thing to collect.

Probably too young to remember that as one of the boxes has (c)1988 and i'd have been only 2 then. Still a pretty cool looking item though which i'd love to see running.

I can remember seeing ads for this thing when I was a kid here in Australia. I remember wanting one so bad.

Or at least, if it wasn't this one, it was a system very similar in concept (LCD games projected onto a wall) to it. How popular were these when they came out?

There are at least 3 systems similar to this .

1- LUDOTRONIC PRO-SCREEN (aka PRO-MO in Germany): this system can project color LCD games on the wall but as well on its own screen similar to the R-ZONE SUPERSCREEEN. (R-ZONE SUPERSCREEN by Tiger is in fact an INTERNAL projection system, and the ones we are talking about are EXTERNAL projection systems)

2- SAVIE PROJECTION SYSTEM: a french rare system . It looks very similar to a bike command were to need to use both hands around cylinders and there is a projector in the middle.

3- There is a modern system , very obscure, from CHINA. But i was not able to get any info. It seems to include 1 football game alone or some games . This is the picture and probably developed between 2007-2010:

4- We can consider the ARCADIA SKEET SHOOT a projection system , but it needs power supply so it is not portable. It projects images on the wall and you need to hit them using a laser gun. What happened to this machine is so weird, please read this new.. it seems some cartridges can burn your house :D

So projection systems can be consider a sub genre. There are even current tests with multiplayer and multiprojection interaction:

    GROUND FX (VIDEO):
This system projects games in the floor.

    EELS GAME (VIDEO)

Definitely , the projections systems were with us from the beginning of handheld history, and they are still here and some of them seems to be a probably innovative future for the handheld games. Concept is the same: the device is a handheld, the game is projected no displayed on a screen.

The very same idea Grandstand launched on the early 80´s

yes! I full agree. And what is very interesting is that in fact the projection systems are like "another family" inside the consoles, because ok.. they are handheld but they don´t have screen, they need a wall, or a box or some place were the signal can be focus. So in fact they have a "virtual screen". No desktop consoles, no arcade machines, no portable consoles by definition.. the new projection systems seems to be a new specie inside the games, and that old and basic Grandstand system started it all.. IMHO.

So what if in 10 years all the systems are based on projections and/ or virtual images in glasses only , no more screens? Then we can say TOMYTRONIC 3D and GRANDSTAND LIGHT GAMES were the real deal about gaming and the pioneers. The history is very strange sometimes.

I had one of these! It was the car racing one and came with a dual joystick/handle type controller with the projector built into it. It took the really large batteries, I think 'D' size, and would eat them up. I loved that system, but I never found any carts for it.
