I just got a 9800GTX last week. Great card, runs very quiet and lets me run everything (with the exception of Crysis) at highest settings at 60+fps that I've thrown at it. Only slightly faster then the 8800, but good none the less. However, sense you're looking for something a bit cheaper, I'd say go with the 9600, sense it's almost as fast as the 8800, and can be had for as low as $150 at places like newegg.
Since this topic is about Video cards, does anyone think an 8800GT would be able to run a game like this at maximum everything at 60+ FPS? Its Dawn of War 2, for those that don't know. It comes out in Q2 2009, and I THINK its been made with the Company of Heroes Engine, but it looks a lot different graphically. Here's a screen of it. I'm fairly certain an 8800 can run this, but it looks a LOT more advanced than CoH graphically speaking.
I am sure that it could run it at all settings on max, although maintaining 60+ FPS might be a deal breaker. The only real way to tell is wait till the game comes out and see what people are getting. Chances are if it doesn't come out for another year is being designed with faster hardware out then is currently around.
Gtx is rarely worth the extra money. Youhave maybe 10% more performance for several hunder dollars more... get the gt oc.
It's always the wrong time to buy a competent gaming PC. - barc0de I find it very discouraging to go out and buy a high-end spec system, only to have its price fall straight down after a short-while. What's the compatibility with DOSBOX/ScummVM and generally, older games, using VISTA and these new cards? Can I run in ole' trusty VESA modes?
Tell me about it, is like every month theres a new piece thats better than the one you choose. I was going to get a 8800 when suddenly the 9600GT gets released. And its the same with processors: now with penryn and quad-core chips going down in price I dont know if I should buy a E6700 becos I'm sure that a week after I get it quads will come down at the same price. Anyway, if you want to play emus and such stay with XP.
8800GTS is a nice card, GTX is a bit too expensive for the performance difference for my liking. The GT is a very nice card, too. In England, the 8800GT is around £150. For £40-50 less, you could get a GS. They are still pretty nice cards. A customer came in today and said he has a 9600GT. He paid around £120 for it, and is very happy with it. Of course, the prices over there will be cheaper. I'm sure you'll find something very nice for under $200
Is not the price you know, I wouldnt care to pay more if I knew its going to last longer. One the worst sensations ever is when suddenly a new card comes along in like a couple months and you feel stupid for not waiting a little longer. And it wouldnt be that much of a problem if most developers knew, what was the name? sorry its been so long since it was in a PC game that I cant remember it.............ah yeah, optimization: today is like every developer just craps a PC game that needs twice the amount of raw power that it would need in a console. That isnt a problem if your PC is basically brand new, but it becomes a royal pain in the ass after 3 or 4 months when some company raises the bar and you have to lower your configurations. With Crysis you've to deactivate pretty much everything for it to run at playable speeds.
Hmm, I think my Video Card will be the only thing that needs replacing for that game, once I get the parts for my machine. I might get an upgrade or try to install another card...if thats possible.
Another thing to factor in with video cards is what resolution your running stuff in. I'm on 1440x900 widescreen and my 7900GS runs everything I've thrown at it and only stutters a little on stuff like GOW, UT3, etc, so a 9x or 8x should be badass for them. My CPU is weak now though, which sucks as it was awesome a few years ago, lol.
That always holds true :icon_bigg:icon_bigg My comment about him waiting to buy hardware was more around the fact that he is looking at a game that won't be out for a year. It is near impossibile to figure out if a card will run it good or not till you get at least a demo build of the game. I am thinking that like previously posted the 9800gt sounds like it will be a pretty sweet card and a decent price point when it hits.
