http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/12/02/news_6114341.html Great, and right after JFK: Reloaded...Basically, it's a game called Dealer: Chronic, Pills & Coke....It also doesn't help that one of the few screenshots of it has: -A asian chick -A black guy -A stoner looking dude -A evil-looking guy in a suit next to a red car with drug dealers next to it.. ...Wow, just wow...Please don't tell me game developers are going to start going for shock values instead of great gameplay...
Obviously aiming for the 8-13 market again!!!! :smt043 On a sort of related point I have NARC on the NES was that similar?
Military games are far more useful for politicians as propaganda fodder than tripe like JFK:R and this will ever be.
I don't know...When you turn on news channels like CNN and the 3 major "Reliable" news channels, you will usually hear people talk about GTA:SA, Halo 2, and even good 'ol Mortal Kombat (Yep, they are still complaining about MK). I have yet to hear politicians nor the press talk about games like MoH, Battlefield, Full Spectrum Warrior, SOCOM, and the like.
You miss my point entirely. No one is ever boing to complain among politicians about military games because they help condition the mindset, outlook on all things foreign and desensitization/dehumanization that they want in the population, and in the end help nurture the ideal xenophobic mindset that is most likely to sign up for the military etc. Which is precisely what I said - such games are far more useful as propaganda fodder for politicians than spotlighting games that feature fantasy violence as harmful to children, which is why they hypocritically never, ever give war sims/military games the slightest mention in theior 'reports' and warnings to mothers about games that 'promote' violence and desensitization to death/gore/murder and devaluing of human life. Look at Lieberman's annual joke of a 'Report Card' on the game industry. He will spotlight games that feature purely fantasy violence such as MK and Doom, and even outright LIE about what a game features (front page on his site boldly lied that DOAXBV featured the option to have the girls nude and adjust breast size, both lies), but never - ever - will Lieberman and his ilk ever even acknowledge military games in these laughable reports.
All too true Rebplix. Liberman is scum. Seems to me that this is what they used to do to music back in the 50's, make all kinds of wild claims that it's poisioning the minds of youth or whatnot. Which is funny, because the music of the 50's and 60's is exteremely tame compared what we have today. Actually, Liberman is out of Al Gore's camp, who along with Susan Baker, his wife Tipper, and the PMRC tried to shut down rock n' roll in the 80's. They are the ones who busted 2 Live crew, Dead Kennedys, Howard Stern, etc. (Jello Biafra has a spoken word alblum about it called Tales from the Frankenchrist trial that basically explains the whole story. Seems this whole thrust against violent games is just a continuation of that. Nobody cares about music anymore, as it's pretty much a given that of decision making age adults listen to "harmful" music and don't trun into serial killers. So they're going after the games now, because public perception out there is still of the opinion that video games are for "kids." Which couldn't be further from the truth. Kids don't play games like these; thier parents won't let them. Kids play stuff like Super Mario or Pokemon. Anyway, it's all bullshit. BTW, I remeber playing a game called "Dealer" on my old Palm pilot, is this an adaption?
I remember Dopewars on the Palm - it was all text based, but rather fun, for a drug game. :smt043 I thought in NARC you killed all the drug dealers with over-the-top weaponry. My kind of game. :smt043
Oh, I see now. I thought you were talking about which type of game politicians/religious groups/mothers complain about the most. Yeah, thats true. I do remember a report on my local news channel, saying FSW would help people in the military (live in a military down) prepare for certain situations. The same news channel also did a report on Halo 2, calling it the "Most violent selling game this year".
Yeah, well video games are full of political incorrectness... but then so are movies, and television, and advertisements, and art, and school playgrounds. Should we ban all of them too? As for drug references.... look at Super Mario Bros. Bloke walks around, finds and eats a magic mushroom, which apparently makes him grow, and invincible the first time he is "killed"! Oh, then he eats some kind of plant, and suddenly, magic fireballs come out of his hands! If those aren't drugs references, I don't know what is!!! There are things out there that could teach our kids bad things, but to be honest, I think it is only us that see them. I remember thinking of things differently as a kid. You don't get the innuendos in James Bond, or the Simpsons. You see things in different ways. I remember an adult joke on TV. A woman was in bed with a man. Suddenly, she hears her husband's key in the front door. He's early! "Quick, get in the closet!" she says. The man gets in the closet, and proceeds to dress. Suddenly, he hears a voice. "Coo, isn't it dark in here?" He looks down, and sees the woman's son. "What are you doing in here?" he asks. "I was playing. I saw you with mummy, and I'm going to tell my daddy!" "Well," the man says, "How about I give you this crisp Ten Pound note, and we keep this to ourselves?" "I shouldn't take bribes!" the boy replies. "OK, a fiver" "Done!". At breakfast the next morning, the boy is admiring his Five pound note. "Where did you get that?" his Father asks. "A nice man gave it to me," the boy answers. "Now son, don't lie. You can go along to Church and confess for that". So, the boy goes to the church. He walks into the confession booth, and sits down. "Coo, isn't it dark in here?" he exclaims. A voice from the other side of the division says, "Not you again!" I found that very funny, and told it to my Mum. She asked why it was funny. I think I told her it was funny because the boy couldn't count, and because he happened to see the man in the church... he must have been hiding there! Hey, I was young and innocent! :smt083 My point is, children don't always take things the way we would. And when it comes to something such as a game that involves shooting someone, they know the difference between right and wrong. They know it is just a game, and not to do it in real life. How is that any different from playing war, cowboys and indians, or anything like that? People who blame video games for violence, murder, increasing teen crime etc. seriously need to grow up and get a life.
Just to play devil's advocate for a moment... There are a few isolated incidences of kids imitating what they see on tv with disaserous results. I remember last year a 12 year old boy accidently killed his 6 year old sister by play-wresteling with her, they were both wwc fans. However, those cases are few and far between. People like Liberman want to blame big time tragedies like say the Columbine school shooting on video games, tv, and music. Sorry, not buying it. Add to the fact that these people are politicians that have a pseudo-religious constituancy and you can see that they're not really interested in "protecting the children" as much as lining thier pocketbooks. All politicians need a reason to galvanise the public, to scare people into voting for them. If they can't find a problem that does so they will invent it. Becasue that's what they are they for, to "save" us. I'm not buying it. Screw Liberman and the Crusted-up-Mothers-against-Halo or whatever they're called.
Yeah, in NARC you wondered around killing 'drug dealers'. Crazy game. Loads of anti-drugs propaganda throughout. I remember the arcade version had absolutely loads of buttons. About 8 I think. Seemed like loads at the time (1991ish), considering the cab was next to Ghouls n' Ghosts and Double Dragon. Also, in the original Ninja Turtles movie, there's a NARC cab being played by some punk dude in that place where the Foot clan hang out.
