About 4yrs ago my dad fell for it, but immediately caught on and got in touch with the relevant banks. This was when the scheme was new. It really is ridiculous, I guess they just prey they catch a 13 yr old stealing his/her parents account.
Would be good just to get them to send the cheque, at least that way it will cost them money to do so. Then a message of "The cheque bounced and the police are at your house" to them should mean you'll never hear from them again and you get a free piece of paper to light a fire with.
The sooner ebay sets things up so noob users can only bid for low value items, until that user has a semi-reasonable feedback & has been a user for at least a month, the better. Oh, and anyone using ur instead of your needs to be immediately shot, anyway (sorry, it's one of my pet hates). They're obviously blindly targeting high value items.
That would be unfair on new users who do want to buy something expensive and don't want to wait around or buy lots of cheap crap just to get a rating... anyway whats to stop the scammers from making false accounts and just banking them and using them after a few months or even using a stolen CCs to make some BIN auctions for 1cent and doing some cyclic bidding just to get quick easy feedback? Ebay seems to think that as long as you can't sign up using a hotmail or yahoo account then everything is fine or if you do then you'll need a credit card but given that the checking against these is poor. I signed up a fake account (to get back at a scammer) using 4929 0000 0000 0000 and a random date. There is no easy way to stop scammers, well there is but Ebay don't want to do anything that might harm their revenue streams....
Not really any more unfair than the current situation,where many folks just refuse bids from 0-raters. Think of it being like this board where you need to get some rep before going for the big stuff. Most scammers aren't going to go to the trouble of both getting feedback & having an account for a prescribed time - there are easier ways of seperating folks from their cash. Of course, you won't stop the determined, but it'd slow down the opportunistic types at bit. Sadly, I'd have to agree completely with you on these 2 points. Maybe they need to introduce the concept of a deposit (much though I loath the idea of ebay sitting on my cash...)?
A credit card on fine is required for bids over $15k they need to drop this to $250.00 sure there could be exceptions so if the seller is willing to accept a bid then he should be emailed and asked and he alone can make the exception. Chances are a new bidder is going to use paypal and pay with a CC anyway.
