I have been playing some good HL2 mods lately and these are my favorites. Black Mesa: Half Life remake in the Source engine. 1187: Amazing mod with great story and gameplay Goldeneye Source: Remake of Goldeneye's multiplayer mode with more maps than the original. Underhell: Terrifying horror mod with plenty of length and even some sidequests. Synergy: Half Life 2 with online co op. Available on steam. Zombie Panic Source: Multiplayer zombie survival and all zombies are controlled by other players on the server. Available on steam. These are a few of the best ones I have found. I will add more later on.
In my opinion. Sven Co-Op: The best online cooperative ever done. The Specialist: Outstanding online bullet-time. The best done Half Life mod so far. BrainBread: The best zombie coop i've seen, amazing implemented gore system on GoldSrc. Desert Combat: The mod itself was amazing but Trauma Studios merged DICE and they destroy Battlefield license. 1942 and Road to Rome were the only good Battlefield. So mixed feelings. Forgotten Hope: The REAL Battlefield 2. Dystopia: The first Half Life 2 mod i can remember so far (you know, except little modifications, i mean full mod), it was great, i just didnt like the tron-stuff.
When Quake was defined by LPB and HPB connections, the CTF mod blew up the whole scene of on-line gaming at the time and more mods followed, Team Fortress etc. Low Ping Bastard (T1) High Ping Bastard (Dial-up)
Brutal Doom: makes an already amazing game (Doom) even better. It is so highly regarded as a doom mod that the developers at id are incorporating ideas and elements of the mod into Doom 4. Metroid Super Zero Mission: More of a rom hack and less of a mod, but still worth mentioning. By far the greatest hack of SM.
My favourite mod of all time is the Knights of the force for Star Wars Jedi Academy. http://www.kotf.com/ There are also tons of great mods for Battlefront 2. Skyrim and GTA IV have the most complex mods in my opinion.
I really enjoyed Black Mesa. I was looking forward to it for a long time, and I wasn't disappointed. I just wish they would release Xen.
Haven't messed with mods for PC games for a long time. But these are some i remember having fun with: Day of Defeat (HL1 MP mod) was so good. It's a shame Day of Defeat Source never managed to be nowhere as good as that. Valve hired most of the Day of Defeat devs, but they don't seem to give a damn about making a new one. =/ USS Darkstar was a very cool HL1 SP mod too. Don't know if it works with the current game on Steam though. Doom 3 Classic mod was another very cool mod. Remember having more fun with it than the normal Doom 3.
My favourite ever mod is Goldeneye X for the N64 (or N64 emulators), which is a project to bring Goldeneye to the Perfect Dark engine, so that Goldeneye has Perfect Dark's advantages, such as weather, better enemy A.I. in single player, bots in multiplayer, being able to play any map with up to four humans (and up to eight bots), etc. To someone who doesn't like Goldeneye, then of course this won't mean anything, but if you love GE, then you'll love this mod. The people who make Goldeneye X are also going to add single player levels too, there are already single player levels made, and available in game, but so far they are empty of enemies and objectives, so you can do nothing but explore them, so we're eagerly awaiting the next release of the mod (current release is v0.5c-i (http://www.goldeneyevault.com/viewfile.php?id=202). The multiplayer is more or less finished, with the following maps: From Goldeneye: Temple Complex Caves Library Basement Stack Facility Bunker Archives Caverns Egyptian Bonus: Fac Backzone! (The rest of the single player Facility map - Facility multiplayer only has half of the single player map) Frigate (The single player map converted to multiplayer) Train (The single player map converted to multiplayer) Cradle (The single player map converted to multiplayer) Aztec! (The single player map converted to multiplayer) Citadel (The famous 'hidden' multiplayer map - parts of this were left in Goldeneye's game code, and hackers have made it into a complete, playable, map) Labyrinth (converted from The World is Not Enough) Weapons: Throwing / Hunting Knife PP7 Special Issue PP7 (silenced) DD44 Dostovei Klobb KF7 Soviet ZMG (9mm) D5K Deutsche D5K (silenced) Phantom AR33 Assault Rifle RC-P90 Shotgun Automatic Shotgun Sniper Rifle Cougar Magnum Golden Gun Silver PP7 Gold PP7 Moonraker Laser Grenade Launcher Rocket Launcher Seeker Hand Grenade Timed Mine Proximity Mine Remote Mine Drone Gun Body Armor (Not a weapon, but you can select whether or not to include it from the weapon menu) You need a flash cartridge or back up device (such as the Everdrive 64, or 64Drive, to play Goldeneye X on a real N64, of course.
It really is great (I bought an Everdrive 64 just so I could play Goldeneye X on my N64, since N64 emulators are still so inaccurate, and it was worth every penny), but sadly non-N64 fans wouldn't like it (at least not first), since it (being on an N64) is so old looking, with such low resolution and simplistic graphics. A real shame, as the playability is easily as good as any modern first person shooter, I think.
Sacrilege to some but Brutal Doom is one of the best mods I have ever played. Vanilla Doom is just as playable as the it was the day it was released but brutal further elevates Doom above the majority of FPS games released today. It's just too fun. I finally got around to reading Masters of Doom this year and it was great reading about the fandom, hype and modding concepts/communities that evolved via Doom. That and the fact Carmack is a genius.
