Hello, I'm new to the forums and I would like to introduce myself. I am a programmer and I joined this site because I found out about the whole Acclaim backup thing. I'm specifically interested in anything related to Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok: Evolution. To be even more specific, I'm interested in the source code of these games. Is there any possibility that the source code of these games could exist in a place where they could be easily retrieved? I have much free time and I would put most of it toward porting these games to other devices, or fixing the multiplayer in Turok: Evolution... Also, if anybody is interested, I was communicating with the person who runs this project and I made some code that could read in the Turok: Evolution model files such as actors and objects and whatnot (but not levels) and export them in another format. I chose to create my own format for use with my own game engine and projects, but I could easily write some code to export it to something like .obj for anybody else. If I can find a place on this forum for me and my Turok related interests, I'd like to become a regular poster and maybe start or become involved with some development or porting projects. Is there anybody else who shares my interests here? EDIT: I would almost certainly port them to the PSP and iOS devices. Also I would most likely make some sort of code interface that would make them easily portable so that people could port it to whatever platform they desire as long as it's powerful enough.
Welcome! I may as well be the first to welcome you here. I seem to be the Turok guy around these parts. I don't know whether or not that's a good thing, but it is what it is. I have interests in modding Turok 1 and 2, but I lack the technical skills to get started. As for the source, I've already mentioned it in another thread but there may be source files for Turok on Acclaim's backup data tapes. There's no definite guarantee, but it's very possible out of the potential 14TB of backup data that source files exist. ASSEMbler (the guy who runs this site) has them but doesn't have the tape drives necessary to dump them. Even if he did, it's a huge pain in the ass to dump everything and he's currently busy with another project. If your interested, ASSEMbler released the design script for Turok: Evolution. I still haven't read it thoroughly, but I saw differences to the final version while skimming through it. You can find it here: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?35477-Turok-4-game-script-!
Thanks for the welcome! What kind of mods do you have in mind? I may be able to help. I'm sure ASSEMbler gets these kinds of offers a lot, but if he knew where to find the source, I'd be willing to pay up to $100 for him to trouble himself with retrieving it and uploading it (Is that even a good offer?) Thank you for the link, I'm downloading it right now. I'm very excited to see the contents.
Personally, I've wanted to have a level editor for Turok 1. There was another thread on here with people wanting a level editor for Turok 2 PC multiplayer. People are getting bored with playing the same maps since 1999. It would probably be better for the community if you were to help them first. My personal wants aren't really a priority after all. I'm sure he'll upload it eventually (if it exists). Even if he knew which tapes had source files (most likely any tape dated from 1995 to Nov 1997 for T1, Feb 1997 to Jan 1999 for T2), there's still the issue of getting the right tape drives, properly dumping the data without damaging the tapes, and releasing it all. I'm looking into getting the necessary tape drives soon, so if all goes well it should speed things up a little once he decides to start.
Have you ever seen this thread? If I can contact this Kaiser person and get some source code I could probably create some sort of editor. I'm not sure if his program could be used for both Turok 1 and 2 though. I'll post back when I have news. But I figure if I'm going to make any progress at all it will start with the help of what he knows about the Cartdata.dat file. I'm excited for when he does! I'll be sure to monitor regularly for when it may turn up. EDIT: Okay, so news! I've successfully contacted Kaiser and he agreed to let me work on this as long as he could be involved! No information on Turok 1 and 2 yet though. Anyway, when development gets started I'll probably make a development thread or a blog or something for people who are interested to follow.
Hello!I'm a Turok 1 fan, too. If you can write some tools for it I'd love to increase the far clipping distance (that short viewing distance is driving me nuts) and to design some new levels. Like Duke Nukem got a new engine (Polymer - Duke Nukem HRP) it will be great to have an improved engine for Turok 1 with support for meshes with high polygon count and bones. I see there is Project Tal'Set, high quality meshes (the T-Rex and Velociraptor) but progress is slow.
Hello, sorry for bumping an old thread here but I am interested in the same things here. Has anyone made any real progress? If your interested in Turok you may like http://www.turokforums.com . Sorry not trying to spam the site or advertise just thought I would show you guys that great place for Turok fans. Anyway if anyone has made significant progress please contact me or respond here. Thanks
