Shredz64 is (will be if successful!) a game for the Commodore 64 that makes use the playstation guitar controller hooked through the PSX64 interface. It is in the beginning stages right now, with only button testing and some graphics routines done, but is on a steady track. There is a good chance Shredz64 will make use of SID and/or MID files for its music, though with channel constraints, SID files are more likely than MIDI files off the bat.

Some obstacles to be worked through include presentation of music given the 3 voice nature of the 6581 and 8580. Calculation, whether static or dynamic, of fret button mappings to notes as well. Also, efficiency needed for quick polling of the guitar controller.

Below is a screenshot of some early test programs designed to report what fret button was being pressed, what direction the strum bar was being pressed, and if the guitar was being lifted up or not. Additionally another debug program shows values being read in off the whammy bar.

    BTW, what about a Genesis/SNES version?

PS: we need a C64 icon, seriously, "pyu ta"? we have one for that and nothing for the old 64?

On the subject of Guitar Hero - and I don't want to start a flame war here - but I've never really understood what people like about it. Of course it's just a matter of personal taste, but it doesn't make sense to me why you wouldn't just play a real guitar. I don't dislike rhythm games in general - I actually loved the original Parappa the Rapper - I just don't see how Guitar Hero is any better or in fact any different than playing a real guitar (other than the fact that it's plastic). It seems like a fad like Pokemon or something, except that adults are doing it.

See, this is exactly what I always thought, and then I borrowed the game from a friend. It does get old after awhile, but it is such a test of reflexes and skill, which is what makes it fun. It's nothing like playing a real guitar, at least I don't think so, it's something in itself. It does seem kind of faddish but I have to say it is pretty fun. Rock Band is a lot better looking though, I think,

You never played guitar, have you? :icon_bigg
It may seem similar but its not.
Playing DDR isnt the same as dancing for example!
However they are both fun games and even guitar players find it fun (and they are no better at it just because they play guitar).

I think the only music/rythm game that is similar to its instrument and can teach you play the real thing is Drum Freaks.

About this project its awesome! but ill wait for a Megadrive version, or even better a NeoGeo version :020:

The reason you would rather play guitar hero over a guitar, is because this is a game. this isn't memorizing notes, this is reflexes. it's entirely different. it just looks the same. If you've never played an actual guitar you wouldn't know. And If you've played a real guitar, it's pretty obvious once you play it.

Mastering a guitar takes time, while mastering guitar hero is quicker.

Honestly I dont like GH, I just think is kinda awesome some guy managed to "port" it to the prehistoric C64:nod:

Whoa, wait have you ever played the game? or a real guitar? cuz I did both and the differences are obvious. The controller is more like a toy or a ukelele. Seriously, that friggin thing lacks real strings.

Anyway, we could go on and on about why GH is nowhere near as a real, professional guitar, but this comic sums it pretty good:

Tell me about it: most forums get more interesting stuff than those bastards, yet I know they make an average of $5K per ad...

That's just too damn cool. Gotta admire homebrew programmers.

PS: What Guitar Hero does that Guitar Freaks didn't, almost 10 years ago? I guess it didn't had licensed music right?

Western console versions? Very hard around here to get good at a game when you have to chuck £1/go into an arcade machine - Me and 2 mates have just split guitar hero 3 3 ways, making it under £20 each, and such good fun after a few beers! Impossible with an arcade version
