I saw this on joystiq a few days ago and I understand how deathmatch is likely to work on this, but was wondering how they would turn the singleplayer game into an arcade game. Did they remove all of the non-action parts of the game(when you get off the train in the beginning for example) and just link all of the action levels together? Or is it the same as the pc version only with a different controller setup?
AFAIF, it's a Type-X, online multiplayer game. You can play against people at other arcades even. They have to have some type of single-player mode though.
Indeed...but I can't imagine the appeal of these. American Arcades are dead, and Japan (which judging by the cabinets, it looks like thats where these come from) apparently has little interest in first person shooters.
Hopefully in a year or two I can pick one of these up Im a big Half-Life freak as well. Its really a shame that the US wont get any of em
Well, it's definitely a new move. The thing is, card-based games (cards you can put into arcades and save your score) are a big hit in Japan right now... especially for vs. games like Tekken 5 and VF4. I assume that development for this thing was really easy/cheap, as it's just modded HL2. The licensing might cost them a fortune though. I'm anxious to see how it does. It not do bad as an arcade game, where the computer versions generally don't sell so well.
All this talk about Arcade FPS made my remember something weird i saw in a movie. Have you ever saw the movie "Grosse Pointe Blank", with John Cusack? There's a scene where he enters a mini-market (that is where his old house used to be) and there's one guy playing Doom2 in an Arcade! OH: That was just a mock-up right? The guy was playing with a joystick and two buttons!
