70 on an I7 is NOT HOT AT ALL. Considering the huge 130W power envelope X58 and LGA 1336 use.(in comparison to 60-95W that 1156 uses) 100C on the cores is the max safe CPU temp on the X58 chipset. Also this is Core temps, and the highest core temp is Core #0 which typically runs between 5 and 10 c higher than Core #3. Actual CPU temp is closer if not less than Core #3. And mind you, with the stock cooler, Core #0 reached 98-100C @ 3.9Ghz. As I said before too, hitting 74 @ 4.0ghz+ is with a prolimatech Megahalems(ranked as one of singular best AF HS's for 1336 http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.p...k=view&id=544&Itemid=62&limit=1&limitstart=13) X2 120mm fans (old fans at that salvaged from an old computer)that can go over 2000RPM. (i expect the temps to drop even more when I get some newer fans for it. + 5 other case fans. And i've never managed to push the cores anywhere near 60 in normal everyday usage (recording music, playing games, web browsing etc)
I just tried out the new Crysis 2 PC demo. It ran almost perfectly on what I assume are the highest settings. I monitored the CPU temperature while I was playing it and I think the highest any of the cores got was 60C.
I apologise - I wasn't trying to compare like with like, but more that my stock cooler keeps my current processor within limits, whilst the supposedly superior 3rd-party heatsink couldn't keep my previous one in check (had other people who's similarly spec'd AthlonXP-based machines ran a lot cooler than mine). A poor comparison, but seeing that the OP was using an i7 on a stock cooler too, I was trying to say it's not as black-and-white as 'the stock cooler is why HL2 is running slow, and an aftermarket cooler will automatically be superior'. In my case, I wish I'd bought a stock cooler for my old machine, what with my new one being lovely and cool.
Likely airflow or VGA card heat issues then, the Athlon XPs didn't run terribly hot with a good cooler. I hope I never said anything that would suggest this. A decent aftermarket cooler will be superior in terms of how efficiently it cools the CPU. If they weren't there'd be no point in their existence. It's worth checking out benchmark comparison before buying one. Uh... The only redeeming factor of a stock cooler is that they're free :/
Vista with less than 1Gb RAM?! You're mad. Vosse, lol - I misread - thought you said 70 for the P4! That's what comes of forum surfing whilst half asleep  Yeah, it's average for i7, but getting up to 75, I'd certainly be thinking about doing something. TBH, I'd rather get it below 70, still.
Hahaha, yeah on a P4 that would've been insane but it's my i7. One thing though , was that it was hot enough(And with terrible airflow) that whatever room I had it in was always significantly warmer than every other room in the house. I think the reason why my cores get that high at all is because of my WAY old 120mm fans(on the Megahalems heatsink, they were the 2 case fans for my old P4 system) that get super loud so I have to run them on silent profile(Which keeps them idle between 500-900 RPM but as the load goes up, so does the noise, when I first turned the computer on with them after I built it, they were so loud I thought the computer was broken, just turned out that the Fans suck. So once I get some decent fans on the heatsink i'm hoping my temps will drop more than they already have.
Well, I didn't exactly find a reason but I did find a solution to this problem. I installed XP 32-bit and it ran perfectly under that OS. I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that I was using 64-bit Windows 7 with a game that was written for a 32-bit OS. It's been like this with almost every PC I've ever owned: you end up having to have at least 2 different OSes installed in order to use both legacy and modern programs. Well, in any case at least now I can play HL2.
I don't really see why HL2 would run slow under 64 win7, the source engine is still occasionally updated and i can't imagine that Valve has left it gimped and on one leg under 64bit os'
What version of W7 were you using though? I've played part of the way through HL2 on Ultimate 64-bit and had no problems and played completely through portal fine.
