At the local youthclub where both me and Sarah (my wife) are leaders, they are holding seperate Lads & Girls nights. The Girls night i have Nowt to do with but i have been asked to run a computer games section for the lads... Now we have access to video projectors, screens, partition panels, tables chairs etc, and best of camo netting... I was thinking of setting up two xbox's wth screens back to back on a system link. Most of the guys in the youthgroup know about or play Halo on a regular basis. Around this i was thinking of themeing the setup in a form of bunker basis. I.e go into the LH side for Bunker 1 and then the RH side for Bunker 2. Using subtle lighting and excessive use of the camo net draped over the top etc. Overall i am trying to create a competition/tournament with as much atmosphere as i possibly can. What i would really love is if there is some other way of projecting the two video sources outside of the bunker aswell for the people who are not playing to be able to watch also  Does Anyone have any other suggestions/advice? I wondered about getting a scrap Xbox controller and spray painting it gold and mounting it on a base as a trophy perhaps? Cheers Lee
For the other screens, use some cheap, nasty scart splitters, they should do the job, like the idea of the golden gamepad as a trophy! try not to stick just to halo though, it is great fun at lanparties, but a bit of variation never hurts! there are a few racing games that support syslink, and a couple of the tony hawks games as well, oh and dont forget mech assault! used to have loads of fun with my mates doing linkups, i think at 1 point we had about 8 tvs scattered around my house for syslink games! if you need a couple of copies of syslink games let me know as i still have a few doubles etc.
Cheers matey. I was thinking about that but not had much experience with other SysLink games.. How about PGR2? Like the idea of Tony Hawks as alot of them can just pick up and play etc (was only really going with Halo as its become a universal game and most know how to play it! lol) Was wondering.. they also have a large hall (its a church building) with a ceiling projector onto a big screen and i was toying with the idea of running another cable to that to allow the action to be shown on the big screen too! lol Is there anyway of recording onto a PC say the fotage so that i could create a montage & highlights for the following weeks youthgroup? Cheers
Vid capture on its own would be reasonably straight forward, i picked up a gamebridge off ebay last week, which will capture anything from a svideo sources and decent quality, just split the signal and it should work fine PRG2 supports syslink, as does outrun 2, forza and midnight club, also rallisport and flatout are good on linkup wish i was coming now, sounds like a fun night (apart from all the kids there of course!)
lol.. aside from teh kids it would be good.. they are thinking of orgainsing an adults lads night version aswell... bit of footie, dodgeball, consoles and some grub! So i am looking for a gamebridge? Does that feed straight into a PC so that i just record on to the harddrive?
yup you can get them off ebay for about £10, plugs into usb and records direct to the hdd in mpeg, pretty good quality as well, as long as you have a decent spec machine anyways
I`d just like to say adult dodgeball sound like a very militant game, whenever adults play kids games somone gets hurt! Spraying the controller Gold is a great idea, I spray Gcons, faceplates, console quite often. Make sure you use some kind of clear coat or the paint will rub off in their sweaty hands!
Either plati-kote or carpaint works pretty well, ive just done a couple of xbox pads in lilac using plasti-kote and the results are pretty good, now just got to do the xbox shell!
Yep most of the paint I use is Plasti-Kote fast dry enamel, it dries pretty quickly (hence the name) and gives pretty good results.
thanks for the advice on the Paint type.. i hadnt thought that far ahead! Adult Dodgeball is lethal... but highly amusing! There was about 25 of us in the summer playing against a load of other youthleaders at a Youthwork event in Uttoxeter.. must admit there were oneor two injurys!
***UPDATE*** right, well this event happened last Friday night and here is the breakdown! My day started by trying to build two trophies, one silver & one gold. the Gold was going to be given to the Best Team & the Silver to the Best singles player.... I had two faulty/dead S-Type controllers so proceeded to scour a couple of charity shops for some used trophys that i could modify for the bases etc. After finding nothing but a Warhammer Novel and Boxed near Mint NES game i was pointed in teh direction of an alladins cave that was a house clearance shop around the corner.... i found 2 quite futuristic candle holders, after picking these up for £1 pair, i manged to cobble this pair together to award as trophys! The paint isnt perfect, but was happy with it given the time i had and the purpose they were intended for! I used some craft spray paint in the end.. it seemed to do the job nicely! The Evening! The tourament went down a treat! The kids and leaders alike bth loved it.. so much so that the football tournament that was also arranged was too low on numbers to make it any good... We ran the H2 tournament first but due to time had to skip the singles so changed the Silver trophy to a 'Best Player/sportsman' etc. The Semi's we completed and then we broke for some food (nice chilli!).. with an announcement that the Final would be played afterwards. The Final went down well, with EVERYONE diving in to watch. Did a 50 kill, no time limit, on Lockout... 4 a side.... The game ended in 8 minutes with the score at 50 - 26. The winning team was made up of 3 of my Brother-in-laws and out of the them , 1 scored 24 kills alone, another did 16, leaving the the last 2 peeps to make up 10 kills between them!!! Overall it was a fantastic evening and so much so that we are now oranising an older 'Lads' night with a 4 way system link, more camo netting and subtle lighting etc... Looking forward to the next one! Somemore pics!:
Oh.. and the dodgeball ended up with a couple of injurys.. most notably a direct hit to the face with the kid being taken off his feet and ending up with a Black Eye!!
Without you they would all no doubt be sniffing glue out on the streets! But seriously...looks like you put together a well organised evening, well done mate. The camo netting and trophies really are great!
Cheers, we are going for more Camo netting next time and will be using Gazebo frames to make them more like bunkers as we didnt have enough this time... plus a plan for 4 xbox's next time... should prove far more interesting as they no longer have to watch for one team only!
sounds like fun! I hope you did Battle Rifle start though, Halo 2 competetive play (even casual play...) with SMG start makes it a joke (slayer? more like "RACE TO A BETTER WEAPON")
sort me out some accommodation and count me in on the next one, ill even provide the extra xbox's if needed
