Hang-On is probably one of my favorite motorcycle racing games. I remember playing it in the arcade when I was a little kid, and then playing Super Hang-On on the Genesis 6-pak. Super Hang-On is okay, but it's so slow and choppy. If they had released it a few years later they probably could've done a better job.

In any case, it's a real shame they never released it on the Saturn, as I'm sure they could've done a near-perfect conversion. There is, however, the version included in Shenmue as well as Yu Suzuki's GameWorks. That's a pretty good port, but I have an issue with it. When I play it on my PVM over SCART, it's evident that it's running at 480i rather than whatever the game's native res is (probably 240p). There's also some smoothing.

Space Harrier doesn't do this; it's displayed at 240p, as it should be. I guess this isn't a problem if you're using the VGA cable on an HD display, but I'd really like to be able to play Hang-On in it's native resolution. I've been trying to find out if there are any other good ports of the game, and it seems like the one included in Shenmue is probably the closest to the arcade. I've thought about getting the arcade board, but they don't seem to show up too often. Plus, you have to have the handlebar or something similar to control it. I could just get a cab, and I may do that at some point.

So, what are your thoughts on Hang-On? What's the best way to play it?

Hang on on the shenmue discs and game works is a shitty remake. It even has shenmue adds in the background on both versions. All the other games seem to be real arcade ports including Power Drift, which I can only guess was going to be included in Shenmue 3.

How is it a shitty remake? All they did was alter the signs. It's not like that fundamentally alters the game. The only thing that really bothers me is the resolution.

That's what I mean. All the other games run in their native resolutions without any changes. What is odd is that the Game Works version of Hang On seems to have an option screen yet the music option doesn't seem to do anything. Do you know anything about this?

I've no idea. I don't own Gameworks, just Shenmue and Shenmue II.

I was just thinking that if they'd tried to make a Hang-On port for the MD/Genesis around '95, they probably could've done a decent job. There were games like Vectorman that could pull off fullscreen sinusoidal wavy effects (I don't know what it's called) at a steady framerate, so I imagine they could've used similar code for the curving of the road in Hang On. There's still the issue of scaling, but even that might've been possible towards the end of the Genesis's life. Then again, in '95 they could've just made a Saturn port. Just musing.

You'd think they could do better later in the consoles life but that may not be true. Turbo Out run came after Out Run on the Mega Drive yet it's a joke. Many years later Out Runners was released on the Mega Drive and that is even worse! Saying that, Sims made a game called Junkers High (think that was the name) which while a bit dull, was a very smooth racer. The game was released in the west as Out Run 2019.

An arcade conversion to XBox live or something would be fantastic. just image, Sega arcade classics featuring Out Run, Super Hang On, Space Harrier, After Burner II, Power Drift, Galaxy Force II and Thunder Blade! Oh man, that would Fucking kick some serious arse. In fact, with that many games they could charge full price and release it on disc with some cool extras such as art, dev' time lines and so on.

Sorry, but the Saturn Power Drift is way off. Just look at Dreamcast Power Drift then Saturn Power Drift. Right away you'll notice that the Saturn does some funky shit with the backgrounds. It does look very good but no where near arcade perfect. The DC version however is probably perfect.

Power Drift was to be release on the Mega CD. It was in the release lists for ages too. I'd love to have seen what they managed to pull off.

Seems I have a prototype rom. Junkers High was it's original name before it was changed to OutRun 2019. Take a look at this YouTube video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wJX6XkBOQo

A good porn? Do you mean port? Auto-correct is not your friend.

Incidentally, the Saturn port of After Burner II is a good one.

Wow... I was just looking at a video of the Master System version and it looks pretty good. I'm surprised they were able to accomplish that on the Master System. Makes you wonder why Super Hang On looks like crap.

The Master System Port of Outrun didn't fair as well. The Master system is a weird system. Where the Genesis/Mega Drive got reimaginings of Arcade games the Master system got ports Case in point Shadow Dancer.
