I need a hanko, but my name translates terribly.

    Any suggestions?

Kevin O'Connor doesn't exactly translate well.

    A friend joking suggested 紺野怪談

    I was not amused.

Why do you need Kanji? I have a few but they all say スミス. I've never had a problem with them.

Your name works for you. I think everyone in Japan has heard of "smith".
My name just sounds bizarre, it's like listening to someone with a mouth of marbles.
How did you do your kid's name?

I use my surname written in katakana. All the foreigners I know do that too, so that's what I'd recommend.

my son doesn't have an inkan (hanko) as he's too young still but his first name is Kanji while his family name is Katakana.

I would think your name would be something like ケービノオカーノル, but I'm not great at translating stuff into kana. So you could just use オカーノル.

I just meant as far as the name. Some people do two Japanese names as first name, then the english name.

You can't get away with just signing whatever documentation it is? After all, it seems to be one of the perks of being a foreigner in Japan. That's been the case for everything I have done so far with the exception of one company who now requires I use a hanko after using a custom one someone got me as a present. Regardless, as Yakumo suggested, I'd just stick to Katakana. I have my first name on my hanko in Katakana and have had no problems with the one company.

I can get away with it, it just makes my skin crawl hearing people try to say it.

My name might as well be ramalamadingdong; it sounds as elegant as a mouth full of pebbles spoken by a drunk man.

I might legally change my name because I am not going to saddle my kid with a ridiculous katakana name that will assure they get bullied in school. It's fucking complicated right now as is.

What's so bad about オコナー (that's how it's usually transcribed)? I wouldn't worry too much about pronunciation. It will never sound 100% right but you'll get used to it.

BTW, so you're moving to Japan?

At least you don't have an brazillian/portuguese name, not that i don't like it, but mine is just like Postal Dude says in Postal 3, I fucking hate it.

*No, its not pato, pato means duck in portuguese.

I think he lives on japan since the forum was created.

OR DIDN'T HE LIVE THERE BEFORE?

Assembler, you live in Japan? That's pretty cool. I had no idea. How old is your son by the way?

I have chosen the characters for my seal, but my name is just two syllables. Even then, the pronunciation is not the same. Don't even bother to include your first name. You have to face facts that your name is going to have to be shortened to make it two syllables. Maybe something like 岡名 (okana), which is fairly close..

Kevin you living in Japan now??? I thought you were in America. I'm in Tokyo now (well for the last year and a half...)!

FYI Shibuya City Center would only register one with my first name in english (last name was too long)... So you might want to check that they will register it at all.

My name is horrible but I already have an idea of a decent kana conversion thanks to a PCE game. No good for anything fancier though.

My life is very complex right now. I don't want to talk about it really. I feel like a prisoner. I have no escape and
    it's like I'm trapped.

I also have a hanko, but my surname is waaaay too long to fit on it. So I went with my first name. 4 katakana characters.

My surname is too complicated for Japanese people to even pronounce, so they're calling me by my first name anyway.
Feels a bit weird, but I don't mind.
