Since looking for a EEEEEEEEEEEEEE pc I realised I will need to put my hard drives in USB caddies, I have approx 6 drives (sata) and was wondering if there was a caddy that could house more then one drive? Cant say ive ever seen or heard of them but surly someone must make one?
If you are talking about portability, I don't know that you will find one that houses more than one drive due to power/heat/shock concerns.
Yes, but they are designed as RAID devices and are not cheap (this one will require tiny SATA to IDE convertors) http://www.cooldrives.com/8hadrusb20ra.html You can get 4 drive ones for around $200. http://www.cooldrives.com/trdubayusb20.html
There are plenty of "desktop" enclosures, which require external power, but I don't know about portable ones powered only by USB (which is what I assume the OP wants since he mentioned the Eee PC).
The 5V (by head) USB provides is not enough to house more then 1 external disk per usb port without external power.
Sorry should of said its purely for desk top work. Idealy would not have raid to keep cost down I Four bay is ok as the other 2 can go in my Mame unit
Innit ;-) got to wait till I get back to the Uk mind but then hopefully the better spec one will be out.
We sell the Asus EEEPC. Horrible piece of kit. A customer ran his on the supplied Linux for a week, and then reformatted with Windows... mainly due to it refusing to support the LAN port! He says it's quite sluggish with Windows on, now. Cooling is always an issue with a 1 drive external case, let alone using more! You can always plug a few into a USB hub - however, make sure that all drive enclosures and preferably the hub too are powered versions.
Maybe he should stick some more ram into the machine, as it stands the basic kit runs slow, whack in more ram say 1gb or more and it speeds up tremendously. Also use XP-Lite to remove the trash he doesn't need and that'll make it faster still. It's a great piece of kit given the size, weight and cost, although in Japan you have one choice, the 4GB version with Windows XP...
Its needs more RAM then the standard offering 2 gig will sort the speed out. Xp is the worst thing that you can do to it. (shudder)
