mods using GBA or similar rechargable batteries, to be plugged into oldschool portable machine like neogeo pocket/color, wonderswan/color, gamegear and similar?

i'm wondering how feasible such hacks would be and how long would the batteries last (neo geo pocket color had INSANE battery life; 40 hours on 2 AA batteries).

Did this on a game gear. If you want to charge it in the device,
you need a cheap charge circuit and a small device to change the voltage.

I would much rather use some rechargeable 2500+ mAh batteries... my Nomad is still hungry enough to drain 12000mAh within 5 hours using maximum volume on relatively big earphones.

shouldn't lithium ion batteries from cellphone/psp/GBA perform far better?

Why bother? Just use rechargeable Alkalines:

    http://www.pureenergybattery.com/

Game Gear had a rechargeable pack, by the way ;-) Actually, weren't there two? The grip and the external one that plugs in the power socket.

    Third party copy:

    Been done for NGPC:

    Been done for WonderSwan:

The capacity matters more than what kind of battery it is... for example, DS has a 1000mAh block in it, and it will last lot less than 2x 2500mAh AAs...

Gomadic makes a wall wart and car charger with exchangable tips:
    http://www.gomadic.com/cabletip.html
They make portable AA chargers too like this one for the DS:
    http://www.gomadic.com/nintendo-ds-lite---dslite-emergency-aa-battery-extender.html
I've thought about making my own or to use their system as a base to make a compatible tip with all my handheld game systems. Yes, it would plug in outside the system, but with it and a few different tips you would be able to play them all... The same tips would then be able to used with a AA case, a car plug, and a wall wart.

Never got beyond the "this would be cool" stage in my head...

I remember the Neo Geo pocket had a third party rechargeable battery pack. I still have one somewhere, however I doubt it still works. If I can find it I will post a picture of what it looks like.

I`ve got a rechargable battery pack for NGPC made by Nyko. It has a very weird form factor with the battery actually diverted horizontally across the center of the units rear.

Out of town for a while so no pics, but I`m sure they can be found floating around somewhere. Also may be of noting that it has rechargable AA`s inside it and seems easy to open for replacing.

I did use a smallish lead acid battery that offered 5Ah at 12V and I got a lot of run time with a Sega Nomad. :)

I just use rechargables AAs with my handhelds nowadays. I can get an absolutely epic time out of an Atari Lynx with the batteries that I'm currently using. Like 6+ hours, maybe more with a new set that I bought.

It's the Power Wormlight. Oh how we forget how good we have it with backlit screens these days.

A point of interest with the Power Wormlight for NGPC is that the battery pack actually adds a Wonderswan EXT. port to the battery compartment which the Wormlight then attaches to. I'm not sure if there was ever a native NGPC Wormlight produced.

I tried using the NDS rechargables but they are crap, they have very little amperage. Putting two AA's in a GBA SP or NDS would probably give a massive playtime I guess!

Yeah, that's the one! I still have mine. It wasn't bad, but a bit annoying to carry around! I dare say the grip was more convenient.
