I'm trying to keep this spoiler free for the most part, but if you don't like spoilers, watch the movie! I went to see it today. It was an interesting film and it had a cool "Documentary" vibe to it until about 2/3 in I'm guessing, but it changes quickly to a cheesy action movie. Don't get me wrong, I liked it, and I thought most of it was pretty good, that is until a whole lot of Dog the bounty hunter lookalikes come into the movie and they stand still firing weapons at robots capable of instantly incinerating them? And then when they see a guy get incinerated, they just say "FUCK" and keep firing? Kinda silly to me. I thought it was a pretty cool film though. I was expecting a LOT more security around District 9, though. In the previews, it appears to be a walled in slum, but in the movie, unless I didn't see the walls or anything, it looked like a slum still, but without really any walls, so the Prawns could do whatever they wanted outside of the slums. I wasn't quite expecting Nigerian gangs to be inside the slums, either... For anyone else that saw the movie, didn't you think it was weird that there wasn't any security around the area? Anyways, for those that saw it, what did you think of it?
I thought it was extremely fresh and surprising. Totally unlike a hollywood film, yet extremely satisfying and ass-kicking. Really creative production design, too. I thought the movie had everything possible, and then towards the end they threw in a giant mech. Just really, really cool. I hate the idea of live action anime films, but Neill Blomkamp would be the man to direct one. I could see him directing live action EVA, if Weta moves forward with that.
I thought it was very good overall, but did have some problems with it... I never really cared about any of the characters except the main alien (this might be intentional), and I thought that the plot had a few holes (if the aliens were being exploited and oppressed for years, why did they never use their super strength and energy weapons to do something about it?).
It seemed like they didn't have the intelligence to do that. It was alluded to that they were "workers". It seems the only smart one (unknown to the humans) was the scientist alien. Perhaps it was a mothership full of slaves or drones, and he was the pilot?
I don't know... a sequel would kind of ruin the suspense of if the aliens come back and kill everyone or not.
