Have reviews made you skip out on good games?

I've skipped out on quite a few games because of either non-stellar reviews, or because of some of my friend's opinions of them. Usually I don't really think much of them past that point, but I recently purchased three games I skipped out on when they first came out, and now I'm so glad I have them.

The three are Assassin's Creed, Mortal Combat VS DC, and Star Wars Unleashed. I can't tell you how much fun I've had on each of them, and each has literally brought a smile to my face when I play it. I know each of the game's faults, but the fun factor totally makes you look past it.

It's sad as well as instead of these games, I purchased other games that had better reviews that I ended up not enjoying at all, like Mirror's Edge, the 30 minute long shooter Call of Duty, and Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts.

Has this happened to you guys? What games have you played that you thought deserved better scores?

I usually don't give a thing on reviews.
The problem is "professional" game reviews are always biased IMO. If the reviewer doesn't like the game it gets a bad rating no matter how good it actually is.

I only take some note of opinions of friends that I know to have the same taste in games as I have, but even then, if I'm remotely interested in a game I try to get a first-hand look at it and decide for myself.

Fuck no. Why would what some (usually) douchebag thinks of a game be considered truthful?

Btw, when I say bad reviews and such, I mean also the promotional videos and stuff they put up. Sometimes it can sway you to think a product isn't going to be any good. I know I had a slight interest in all those games, but as soon as I saw vids of them with people complaining what was wrong with them as they played, it left a bad taste in my mouth. Meh, anywho. Just glad I got to play the above titles at last :).

    Not for me.

But one made me expect too much about a game. (IGN about Mario Tennis), and after that I never cared about reviews anymore...

I'll usually look at reviews. And I have a couple of key friends who have pretty good opinions when it comes to games. Similar tastes and what not. But if I'm interested in a game it'll get a rental at least (can't beat free rentals).

Yea I need to get back into renting. I guess, in the case of Unleashed, what also confused me was that the demo in my opinion was horrible. It didn't do the game any justice. I think that's a problem sometimes, where you base so much trust in demos or videos that it'll make you have the wrong opinion of what the game could be in it's full form.

Reviews don't stop me from buying good games or any games for that matter. If i see a game that interests me then i'll buy it even if it has gotten not so good reviews as some games might be bad but a few of them may actually end up being fun becuase of that.

Also i think that because everyone has different tastes i may like a game that was badly reviewed and slated so much or was given excellent reviews where as someonelse won't like it.

I don't trust reviews that much really. Looking at the entire review average on something like Gamerankings or Metacritic is a little more reliable, but the scores given in single reviews tend to vary a lot. Sometimes a good game like Senko no Ronde might also get a really bad score in a lot of reviews for stupid reasons...

Reviews can certainly keep me from buying a game, but it will never influence me to purchase a game. The reason is simple. If the whole internet says a game totally sucks, chances are, it really does. If the entire internet says a game is so awesome it will rip a hole in space-time, well, it could likely just be paid shilling.

You should treat reviews as just one guy or one gal's opinion. Nothing more, nothing less.

I was really looking forward to resi 5 before i downloaded the demo from live, after playing that i decided i would not buy it at launch maybe get it from the bargain bin in a year or so i thought..then my brother fetched his copy to my house a few months later and we played co-op from start to finish WOW what a experience (AGhh im out of ammo help me..SHHHITE fcuking run!!! *some of my brothers quotes during gameplay* lol)
needless to say i bought my copy asap and love it.....BTW that demo should serve as a warning to all developers of how you can destroy your games hype in 2 minutes rofl.

Most of the big titles always get pretty much the same score in reviews too  There's almost no variation, even though it's common in reviews of other games; for example, I thought Gears of War is boring, but almost no reviewer gave it less than a 9 score, typically mentioning the exact same things as the other reviews...you'd think even one reviewer could have a different opinion, but no.

I remember shying away from Chromehounds for the Xbox 360 due to lackluster reviews. A week later, some friends of mine had it and raved about it, so I decided to pick it up anyway.

It ended up being one of my favorite games of all time.

In the past I have missed out on a game due to a review only to find later on that the game is fantastic. These days I ignore them.
