Ok to make a long story short, I bought a Gigawing CPS2 B board on ebay ( Tested ) and when it got there it gave me the blue screen.
I took the lid off to check the battery voltage only to find the thing ruptured. It broke off the board and spilled acid everywhere.
Quite a mess, the battery was wedged between the board and the case so I did not hear it rattle inside.

Of course this board will need to be phoenixed but more importantly the acid needs to be cleaned of.

The problem? There are tiny specks of it everywhere, the battery probably bumped around everywhere during transport. The corrosive is still in liquid form and it does not look like it had time to eat through the board and chips already but this thing needs emergency cleaning.

How should I go about it ? I am tempted to just throw it in the dish washer but maybe I should manually brush it in the bath tub?

Here are some pictures I took of that '' disaster ''. .. The pictures do not show it but there are small specs of the acid all around the board.

I would say white vinegar, and scrub gently with something like a toothbrush.
    Then rince with distilled water.
I saw a guy restored old arcade stuff like that (and electrolyse for highly corroded board)

Well, I followed the advice on someone on Shmups and simply sprayed lots of 99% isopropyl on it and brushed the crap off. Looks clean now.

Now that this is taken care off, something came up to my mind. I have several CPS2 boards including some that are already phoenixed. I wonder if I could take the roms from one of them and try it in this board just to see if it works good or not.
Might be a good idea to check that out before I go and get myself phoenixed roms. Im just not shure If everything else is compatible and ready for phoenixed roms from a different game. Ill try to get more info on that.

In case you encounter problems due to the battery damage, I've made a spreadsheet which details most of the trace routing around the battery area. So far it has saved 2 b-boards for me. Needs a bit of work to be in a 'publishable' state, but let me know if you need it.

Would be awesome if schematics of the CPS2 boards would surface somewhere though :)

people do conversion with the boards so it might show something with other phoenix roms.

I know but I recall reading there may be some slightly different B- board versions and some modification could be necessary to run a different game than the one it originally had on.

Yes, the jumpers may be different, and also the PAL chips may be different. And later PAL chips don't work on early revisions of the motherboards, though there are workaround mods.

Well, lo and behold. I just got myself another suicided board. This time it is a DnD ToD A + B kit, was sold as ''untested'' . When I tried it of course it gave me the blue screen of death...
I tested the A board with another B board and this part is good. I checked inside and measured 3.6v at the battery... But maybe that is because I had just powered it an hour before and some Charge was being held or something..
There was a sticker on the board stating the battery had been replaced in Jan 2008.

Thanks for this, I will be purchasing an eprom programmer soon and when I have this in my possession I will definitely be looking for useful stuff like this.
I put my 2 faulty CPS2 boards in storage for now until I have a programmer.
Thinking of getting that TL866CS that is available from China at 50-60$ shipped.
It seems to be consistently getting great reviews, especially for the price.

Doesn't look like that programmer does the 27C322 series, which is quite useful for MD/CPS2/Neo Geo chips. Having a built in IC tester sounds very handy though!

That is a good point, I think Sanni on this very forum summed out the problem pretty well.
    https://www.assemblergames.com/foru...ndations-on-a-good-EPROM-EEPROM-Reader-Writer

I think I want to avoid the GQ-4X as apparently it is a bit finicky and the adapters are rather expensive. Seems like the Game data eprom on a CPS2 are DIP40, only the Maskrom look like DIP42, maybe I would be ok to phoenix my two boards with TL866xx?
I have seen evidences of people who used this programmer to phoenix their board.
Maybe I should go for a hi end programmer and not look back.

Max, remember if you need to program some 27C322, you can just ask me. :)

Oh certainly, for CPS2 in particular only the sound and gfx EPROMs are the big fellas. I can't write those chips either, the only occasion I've needed to I got buyicnow.com to write them onto the chips when I bought them. Very handy service.

I just thought I'd point out the deficiency in the device in case it was a crucial feature for you, sounds like that's not the case, so go ahead :)
