I made a topic at Xbox scene so im just going to copy and paste it here in the hopes that some you guys might have some ideas. Heres the situation:

    "
    Hi and thanks for reading.

I have a older 360 that I got aroung late summer 2006. Its been great up until about 3 months ago. It would start freezeing durning games. No red rings, just a full game freeze. No buttons worked or anything not even the guide button. But when you eject the disc it pulls up the guide for a second if you hit the button then the console reboots.

This started about 3 months ago and has been getting worse. Also when I put discs in it will spit them out once and I have to reinsert them a second time to get them to take (the first time it dosent even try to read, it just closes then opens again)

On top of that it has started to do it ALOT with GTA4. It did it about a hour ago and upon looking at my brand new collectors edition disc it has a 2 large perfectly circular scratchs in 2 diffrent places!

I dont think MS will repair it for free since its not RROD is there anything I can do myself (im quite good at hardware repair and the like) This 360 has had the hell played outta it and NEVER red ringed so I dont want to lose my mobo. Im thinking its a stright up DVD drive problem since its spitting them out, scratching them, and not reading them. (locking them up)

Please help me out. I really dont want to trash my good 360 as I love it to death. Please let me know and thanks!"

Out of warranty repairs cost about £50, which is a better option than just messing around with it as there's probably nothing he can do to fix it himself.

I had nearly the same problems with my XBox 360. No warranty and a PGR3 100 contest Xbox 360; for sure i won't send this one to Microsoft to get back a vanilla console!

So i opened the console using one of the guides which can easily be found in a google search. I carefully cleaned up the console and especially the DVD drive - now it's working any without problems again.

Thats a good question, if you send in one of the limited editions, or a Halo system, do they not send it back?
