Hello there, fellow xbox people! I've been trying to boot the Hexen 2017 disc, to format and install a new harddrive. But, the disc just doesn't boot with the new HDD connected. It gets stuck at the blue Xbox / Linux logo and only boots with the original harddrive.. What am I doing wrong? The chip is a DUOX2:
It should boot, this is odd. You could try an initial setup with aid. I suppose it’s possible that the bios on your duo x2 are out of date it may be freezing whilst looking for a dash board. I say the latter however it seems super unlikely being that I don’t know of any bios with those characteristics. You could try running hexen on the old drive and updating the bios on your duo x2.
Blue Xbox logo?? like a blue version of the flubber boot logo thingy?? Well I know that hexen and other software takes ages to boot how long did you leave it for, if longer then 30 mins then yeah it's stuck but on any of my xboxs it doesn't take much longer then 15 mins to boot Do you know what version of xbox motherbord you are working with if its a 1.6 or 1.6b getting mod chips on them is a pain with the LPC rewire you have to do As a unrecemend mod that i always do is soldering BT to ground so the mod chip is always enabled as there really is no need to dual boot retail and modded BIOS theas days and is also makes the mod chip a one wire mod chip ^__^ well outside of the LPC rewire for V1.6 xboxs -__-' I'M NOT 100% SURE THAT'S GROUND ON THIS CHIP but i'm abort 90% sure so you will need to double check that.

Normally that switch controllers the BIOS bank on the chip for v1.5 and less BIOS and v1.6 BIOS If the xbox wasn't booting at all I would flip that switch but by the sounds of it the xbox is booting just not booting hexen properly so playing with that switch wound make it worse eg. would make the xbox not boot at all
I will, thanks! AFAIK the bios hasn't been touched since ~2005 when the chip was first installed. How do I know which bios on the Hexen disc is compatible with the duox2? Yep. It's a 1.6,pretty sure. Thanks for the advice, but I'm not going to do that. Just going to leave it as is. I like the idea of booting vanilla by pressing the eject button Pressing power already boots it up. Eject boots it up with stock bios. It works and reads burned discs once the original HDD is hooked up. EDIT: I just tried booting with another hard drive and that worked fine, I now have a 300GB HDD installed and working. It seems the first hard drive that wasn't comaptible, for some reason.
Nice to know you got it working good job If you had to solder stuff to the back of the motherboard then it's a v1.6 mobo. Oww I just had a idea with the HDD. You're trying to put normal IDE HDDs in it right? Did you set the jumper on the HDD to cable select? sometimes setting it to slave works to but try cable select first. If that doesn't work then yeah you may just have a dead HDD. If you're really desperate to get that other HDD working you could try putting it on a computer that can read IDE and try formatting the HDD in Linux but with 300GB you should be able to get around 50 to 60 or so xbox games on there so it depends on how meany xbox games you want to play at once.
Didn't have to solder anything, thank god. Bought it at a secondhand shop for €25. Was planning to softmod it, until it booted up with that blue Xbox logo when I realised it was modchipped Yep. I tried master/cs/slave. None worked. The hdd is recognised and works with a PC. Yep, it will do, until I get my hands on a bigger one. (Like if I magically managed to unlock that 500GB drive ^^)
Nice find I'm kinda my local modding and fixing console guy so i have rewired to many LPC ports for my liking that i almost don't need a guide for it >__<' but yeah between that and the v1.6 inability to run software like chimps modding the v1.6 xboxs with anything more then a softmod is kinda a pain so your lucky you don't have to. Also what is this blue xbox logo your talking abort?? normally with thease modchips it's a pink triangle or the microsoft logo text gets replaced wtih xecuter ... unless you mean this which i don't thing is even ment to be on that chip :S so a BIOS dump may be something to upload if you can manage it... That's super weird that the HDD works fine in the pc and you can run other HDDs in the xbox, out side of maybe a wired format the xbox isent liking or the HDD's is not formatted at all i cant help you without being there sorry Well Ok if this 500GB HDD is the same as the one that's not booting in your xbox in this thread then yeah that would make scene if it's locked and your getting a error 6 but if your getting no errors and just a hung boot it could been a corrected locking sector but then it wouldn't work in a pc at all if the hdd was locked... man this is a thinker... well i would definitely try xboxhdm if you have a computer with IDE on the motherboard and i think that may be your best bet. if you could boot that HDD at all in the xbox i know there is a hdd tool by team assembler that might do it but i cant remember what it's called also if you could boot at all you could try copying that tool off the hexen disk that let you reflash the chips and try updating your BIOS on the mod chip... Sorry i cant help much out side of that, i know i probably could work it out if it was in front of me or at lest give you a soled reason why it's not work
