Here are the pics: I've been researching online, and they only talk about 2 revisions: one with the metal plate covering the whole bottom (VA0 to VA2.3, bad sound), and another one with a gap (VA3/4, good sound)... well, as you can see in my pics, my MD2 doesn't even have a metal plate! http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showth...-good-Genesis-1s-and-Genesis-2s-from-bad-ones (btw, I'd ask at sega-16.com, but I've been waiting for the moderator's registration approval for months now!) Genesis 2 Revisions VA0 to VA2.3 http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/8219/genesis2va0va23.jpg Genesis 2 Revisions VA3, VA4 http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/8452/genesis2va3andva4mother.jpg Just FYI, I bought the MD2 myself in Akihabara, in Japan a few months ago, so it's not one of the ASIAN or ASIAN-PAL models. Thanks!
You were comparing with a US model, as they don't have any info on the Jap MD2! It should be this model: http://www.genkivideogames.com/imagesnew/HAA2502actual.jpg Insides: http://www.innovative.net.my/pvt/MD2NTSC.jpg Source= http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showth...-from-bad-ones&p=391943&viewfull=1#post391943
It seems original to me from the bits of PCB I can see from the vents, but a shot of insides will tell it for sure.
My Mega Drive 1 lacks either metal plate, the MD2s are probably the same. I think it has to do with FCC regulations here in the states just like those metal plates in the CD and 32x.
Asian and Japanese consoles did not have strict requirements at that time. Nintendo had shielding on it's Super Famicom only because it (voluntarily) joined the VCCI (Voluntary Control Council for Interference by Information Technology Equipment) in 1988. SEGA didn't so no shielding on their stuff.
I am sure that with this awesome view of it's innards even the OP have no doubt that it's a legitimate SEGA unit.
Personally I never had any doubt about it! I mean, I bought it by myself in one of the biggest shops in Akihabara. Now let's see if anyone can tell me with motherboard revision is this...
I think it's a V01.8 :S http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showth...-good-Genesis-1s-and-Genesis-2s-from-bad-ones Apparently they are the ones with bad sound chips... it's funny bc it's sounds great to me!! I'm looking to buy a MD1 with good sound soon... then I'll be able to compare... Such a tragedy my MD2... such a beauty from the outside, but crippled on the inside...
It's based on other people's opinions. You don't need to believe what other people says. Some of the people on these forums are "audiophile freaks" so don't take what they say exactly. For me the sound of such machines are perfectly fine.
