This debate has gone to 3 forums already. I'm asking here because everyone here is unbiased. The basic basis for this is somebody is stating that Garou was a massive failure and because of that there won't be a sequel. My counter arguement is that if it was a flop why are there 3 ports of it with 2 of them reaching equivalent Greatest hits status. Plus the legions of fighting fans that love the game and like me have every version. (Legit too) He goes on to argue that becuase the game was such a FLOP they are "trying to recount their losses by reissuing the game" but what losses are there to recount? the last port which was the 360 port was 10 years later... What do you guys say? Garou: Flop or minor success? I'm dragging this one out because the guy I'm debating with is such a know it all.
If I recall, it was no more failure or success than KoF or anything...hence the ports. SNK doesn't really do sequels much anymore. We're on what, 7 metal slugs after it being out for over a decade. FF was last updated in 99, and KoF gets an update every year (ala Fifa and Madden) they only made 3 Art of Fighting games...and as far as I know those aren't considered "flops". so take that comparison as you wil
This really, they just have a nice cult fanbase. Although just taking a quick look at Wikipedia it did have some great reception from the Media.
Third party games do not make "Greatest Hit" or "Platinum Hit" status just because the publisher wants the label. They only get there if they sell the required number of units. -hl718
There are games that sell beyond the criterion of GH's labels minimum and never get said label reprint
Well if said games are selling extremely well why take the retail price hit? Usually you'll see a game go to GH once it has hit a minimum sales mark *and* full price sales are declining. -hl718
I'd say no. I've had almost 100 people show up for motw tournaments, so I'd say it's a much loved game.
Shin Samurai Shodown sold over 250,000 units on the Neo Geo, the best selling KOF game was 95. Most games in the last 5 years of the Neo Geos life sold a few thousand of copies (literally). Even on all formats games like Metal Slag as a combined total have barely got anywhere near the heady figures of the golden era.
