You can't really buy a Japanese mobile without the contract unless you but shitty old used ones.

Are you looking for a specific model? You can buy without a contract, they're just expensive.

You can get phones without contract but you still have to fill in forms and give id (at least a Gaijin registration card) before you can use it.

that's what I meant. It's just far too much a pain in the arse to bother. Takes over 20 minutes easily and they you've got to do all the forms etc. Someone with loads of free time is the best person to help out in this case.

What's the point in getting Japanese phones anyway? They won't work outside Japan unless it's 3G and then you have to find what network it will run on. Probably Softbank will be the best bet since they use to be Vodafone.

Yea. I get the unlock to use it. The handphones I have at my place are overprice and they kinda suck. So well.. I always get Japanese Hp that can be used in my country. :) Usually Softbank and Vodafone ones. Now a few DoCoMo ones can be used.

If I saw this earlier I could have helped, I walked past a stall in Akihabara and one guy had a box full of them, quite recent phones but rather scruffy looking. Was thinking of buying one myself as they were cheap. I am home now though so can't help you.

I don't want to hijack the thread (though seems you might be sorted anyway) but do Cave still do their mobile phone games? Stuff like the Mushi & Progear ones. I realise most of them will probably be crap, but it'd be nice to have them.

I'd quite like to get an old crappy phone (Not a phone on contract though - I presume they do Pay as you go or games could be transfered?) with the phone games they've done, is this feasible for someone in Japan to do? (with payment for their services, of course!)

THey sure do and they are far from crap. Infact you won't believe they are running on a phone (well, for most of the games anyway). Check out this thread - http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?p=267934#post267934

Weren't Japan going to do away with the whole SIM card idea and just have a phone hard-coded to a number? New phone = new number!
