Hi this is my first post here I hope to stay awhile. Followed the YouTube channel for some time. Any who... I have recently acquired a Naomi 1 board and virtua tennis for a good price in working order. I have a 300w ATX PSU that I plan on using. (it was used for my 60 in 1 cab for a good while. Now my issue is im a tad money strapped and i know that is not great if your gonna be running an arcade cab but if i search hard enough and wait i can find some good deals and maybe rig some things up. I/O boards: Now to some things I would like to go over and need some help on. I know i can buy a Sega v1 jvs to Jamma I/O board. Unfortunately the only ones i can find atm at least on ebay are at the lowest 89.99. How ever. Heres the fun part i found a Youtube video a while back of a guy who has a Sega JVS i/o 837-13551-92. He some how rigged it to run through a jamma finger board. Now atm there are some of these boards that are online going for pretty cheap. Question 1 how the heck do i go about finding a harness for JVS boards and how do i run the pin outs off the JVS board. (are they factory standards since it is based on jvs.) Ill provide links below for most of my references like the Youtube video. I understand i can not get more than 4 buttons per player this way but i dont need more than 4 buttons in the foreseeable future. Second question is there any specific things i need to do if I am running JVS will these boards work with most all games? The listings say Initial D but i doubt they are any different other than like bells an whistles across different JVS I/O boards. Also what are the advantages and disadvantages of a JVS I/O other than the ability to use digital inputs and supposed loss of Jamma I/O interfacing. If any. Note: I will not be using a factory cabinet for this system so the necessity of needing Jamma is not an issue for me i can use either if possible. Briefly on the ATX PSU: I will be ordering the specific power plugs from Digikey for the Naomi to use from my ATX PSU. The Naomi manual gives the voltages and plug types necessary i need no help there but if there are any tips about doing an ATX PSU please let me know. Setup for the Naomi and testing. I would like to ensure the unit is stated as working like the seller told me. So i know the filter board contains service and test switches on it. Is it as simple as rig the PSU to work with the naomi plug the db15 cable into a TV capable of using VGA and powering into test mode? If im setting up the Naomi what are some key things to remember when doing so. Like especially with interfacing between the I/O board i end up with will I need to change settings in the rom to work with the I/O board? I have done the most extensive research i could possible do and having a Naomi and an eventual candy cab has been a dream of mine for quite some time. Im very happy to have gotten one so low priced. Now i just need to get it to run. Any and all help is appreciated I know I'm asking a lot thanks. If anyone has a spare I/O board im willing to see what you would like for it.
You can use the later Sega I/O boards for any Sega JVS game as long as you wire it up like that guy did. The 60 pin JST RA connector has all of the digital I/O pins. The main problem is buying the connectors and pins for making your own JAMMA harness (no one sells one). The only place that doesn't sell it in bulk (like 200 pcs) is Giz10p. Also, it is quite a bit of a work if you only intend to play normal games and nothing dedicated like a driving or gun game. The later JVS I/O boards are all intended for dedicated games. JVS I/O boards aren't necessarily compatible with another manufacturer's games. In most cases, they do work but for Taito stuff, this is not the case. Testing is as simple as connecting power and video then using the filter board's buttons to navigate the menu.
Don't complicate you life find a sega ver.02 I/O and hook up. Most of the game are compatible (driving and lightgun not), I dont tell you about the capcom because some games are not compatible.
ok well am i the only one that thinks 89 dollars to 145 dollars for a i/o sega v1 board is a bit much. maybe im wrong. They dont seem to be very rampant on the internet. :/ Unless someones willing to sell me one or something Ill wait for 3 pay checks to come in and buy one on ebay. Also I just got my board in and there appears to be very professional looking solder jobs for resistors held with a tad of hot glue and a single green jumper wire. Was this repair work or a factory thing. I want to say it was repair work. The dust is awful suggestions for cleaning out the fan and the surface of my board. Thanks a bunch guys.
Every game that I have that requires digital buttons works great with the Sega JVS to Jamma I/O board. For some games like Marval Vs Capcom 2, I need to wire button 6 to the extra connector on the side but that's about it. Racing games such as Initial D (Naomi 2 Only) will not even boot unless the JVS I/O is powered up and connected. Strangely enough Club Kart throws an error when connected to my jvs I/o and initial d setup but still works fine but of course the shifter does nothing, since the go karts don't shift. Typing games such as Lupin III The Typing (love myself some Lupin typing action) and The Typing of the Dead don't seam to care which I/o board is present as long as one is present and powered up, you just need a dreamcast keyboard wired up with a 5 pin jst nh to the maple interface. Long story short, the sega jvs to jamma I/o board is probably the easiest thing to wire up for games that use simple digital controls, as long as your jamma harness has power or you wire the power leads to the I/o board.
Thanks GameMaster Im thinking of purchasing this board soon. I already have Sega Dreamcast keyboard and a spare cable for the keyboard as the first one was obliterated in shipping. I got a free replacement and kept the cable just in-case i needed it. Nice to know i can do that even though i knew of the maple bus ports on the naomi. What games will need extra buttons? what games can the sega jvs to jamma converter ver1 not play exactly is there a list out there? Thanks for the help guys im super excited about this project! All the in-depth info i can get will be great!
The only games I have that the sega jvs to jamma wont work with are the racing games as they require the 64pin amp digital connector for controls which the sega jamma board lacks. As far as the maple goes, with usa bios, only Lupin III The Typing, The Typing of the Dead and Gundam Federation VS Jion (Regular and DX) work. (of the games that I own) If you install a Japanese bios the following games work with a dreamcast controller: Cannon Spike/Gunspike, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Moero Justice Gakuen (Project Justice), Capcom VS SNK Millennium Fight 2000 Pro (will not work in usa bios at all). Without the Japanese bios, none of them have the vms kit option in game test mode. The only game that I have that requires more then the 4 face buttons on my neo geo cd controller are, Marvel VS Capcom 2 (Button 5 on jamma harness and button 6 on aux connector on left side of board) and Guilty Gear XX #Reload (button 5 on jamma harness gets wired to select). All my other games only use 4 buttons and start other then my racing games. These are the games I own at the moment: Beach Spikers Capcom VS SNK Millennium Fight 2000 Pro Club Kart European Session (Cart) Dead or Alive 2 Millenium (Cart) Dynamic Golf (Virtua Golf) Guilty Gear XX The Midnight Carnival #Reload Gun Spike / Canon Spike (Cart) Initial D Arcade Stage (Export) Initial D Arcade Stage Version 2 (Export) Initial D Arcade Stage Version 3 (Export) Lupin III The Typing Marvel VS Capcom 2 Rev A (Cart) Melty Blood Act Cadenza (Version A) Mobile Suit Gundam The Earth Federation vs The Principality of Zeon Mobile Suit Gundam The Earth Federation vs The Principality of Zeon Deluxe Project Justice/Moero! Justice Gakuen (Cart) Sports Jam Super Major League (World Series Baseball) The Typing of the Dead (Cart) Virtua Fighter 4 (Version C) Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution (Version B) Virtua Fighter 4 Final Tuned (Version B Rev F) The baseball game need some weird control panel with bats that I do not have the the Dynamic Golf requires a Trackball I/o which I do not have yet.
Oh wow thanks so much Gamemaster ! Im actually pretty happy to know meltyblood will likely work cause thats one of the games on my top 5 for getting a Naomi arcade!
Of the games I own Guilty Gear XX #Reload, Melty Blood Act Cadenza, Capcom VS SNK Millennium Fight 2000 Pro, and Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution Ver B require Japanese bios. Its easy to swap bios with the proper chip and an ic extractor. The initial d games, Virtua Fighter 4 games, Club Kart and Beach Spikers require a Naomi 2 system to run, the nice thing is Naomi 2 is fully backwards compatible with Naomi 1 cart and GD-rom games.
Yeah but I got a naomi system one, it will definitely do for the time until i get the job i want and settle in for awhile. I figure for a winning bid at 43 dollars including Virtua Tennis and being able to play as many games as the Naomi ver1 can. I cant really see the reason to pay in the 100's just to play as many more games as the Naomi 2 can offer. One day ill have one i suppose but for now im just glad i have one. As for the i/o board i just paid for a Sega jvs to jamma ver1. So thats pretty exciting! Yep i realize i do need a Japanese Bios to play japanese games and i preferably want the rev H chip so i can plop a dim board on her. I dont know why it took me till yesterday to realize that even if i cant fit a gd rom system in my tiny little bartop cabinet i sure as hell can run a compact flash mod on it so thats a plus! The next step is an audio amp. Sure i can just use some external speakers but thats not as fun. I want to shove some speakers up in the front of the cabinet where the kit had some holes pre-drilled. I need to decide on what kind of amp im gonna use that will not obliterate the space in the cabinet especially if it may require its own psu (which i likely will not want if it will need its own). I will be building an AC power distribution block too. Most of this info i want to move to my new thread on the arcade supergun section for my cabinet project. I dont mind talking here though heh. If you want to check out what im working with space wise that threads where you will want to look.
Ok so I learned the I/O board I have (which is the 838-13683-93 Is capable of driving more than just 3-4 buttons.) CN6 is essentially a kick harness and you use JP1 to enable or disable this feature. After endlessly rattling my brain and searching the web I found this forum post on Arcade Otaku about the Sega Jamma to Jvs i/o boards. I now found the pin outs that seem to match up with my board. As soon as i can I will up date this post on my findings if they are successful or not. This is a huge help to me and im sure other users who might be wanting to get into the Naomi scene as there are lots of posts out there saying the Capcom Jamma to JVS I/O would be the board you want to use if your using more than 3 buttons. (Or at least thats how it came off to me when i first started out.) Truth be told this little board here can run up to 8 buttons for 2 players!!! Links below: http://forum.arcadeotaku.com/viewtopic.php?t=25874 http://www.sega-naomi.com/resources/manuals/capcom_vs_snk_2_manual.pdf So now if your on a budget and don't feel like forking out money on a Capcom I/O you can still use a kick with your Sega Jamma to Jvs Converter ver1 board! But do note that these boards do not contain an audio amp. Page 25 of the Capcom vs SNK2 Manual has a wiring diagram which shows the pin outs of CN6 on this board. I hope my findings helps someone out on the webs as most of this sort of data is just scattered all over the freaking place.
