alot of money, a license and some expensive hardware. Or you can just skip to the expensive hardware if you 're lucky enough to find it.

You can choose between the Linux Kit,

or more realistically, the T-10.000 "TOOL" development kit. It's like a big black PC that costs more than 10 PS2 units put together.

..oh, and some skills ;) VU0 and VU1 need special love and affection ;)

stick to PC, even if you make a console demo there's no way to run it on an unmodified commercial console. Besides, if it's a project (for school I assume) they wouldn't want you to do it without a legitimate license etc.

You could try some Dreamcast coding, no modchip required there.

To be fair, there's a big difference between sticking a CDR into pretty much any old unmodified DC, and needing a specific game+memory card+network adapter+PC. There is also a fairly decent, free and legal development library available in LibDream.

If you've illegally downloaded official software development kits, then most of the time you're going to need expensive hardware. Either choose a machine which has a healthy coding community and low-cost development hardware requirements (Dreamcast, Xbox, GBA/DS/PSP) or code on your PC.

If you don't know any programming languages, it's usually advised to learn something like C/C++ on a PC, and then specialise.

ps2 also has a healthy opensource coding community, just check ps2dev.org ... it has an opensource sdk for ps2, allthough you need a modded console or a way to to the independance exploit, so be prepared to put some work into geting things up and running.

well. you should also know about gcc toolchains, subversion and building from the commandline. and PLEASE read all the documentation and forums before asking for help. the setup is not easy, but there is lots of information available.

very positive: you can actually put your work on a website without interfering with sony if you use the opensource stuff.

also there is a ps2 linux kit (dvd, hd and keyboard) that comes with proper system documentation. you might want to consider purchasing that.
