Today someone traded in an Ipad 2 in near mint shape. They used it just a couple of times. We didn't pay much for it because the seller didn't remember the password. There is so much information on the net on how to remove user ids and remove Icloud locks but most of it leads to spam or adware. Is there a way to do this without taking the thing apart?
It's all scammers out there. There is no way to remove an icloud lock other than through Apple with the proof of purchase. If the seller was the original owner then it's just a matter of resetting the password with the registered email address and the security questions. Mostly "I forgot the password" is just an excuse used by resellers. It doesn't mean that it's stolen but if that's the case and you don't have access to other details then you're stuck with a brick that you can just use for parts.
You can turn it on and surf the net with it but you can not add aps without the password. To erase all settings and data also requires the password. You guys are connected to the hip with tech life but not everyone is. A lady in her 60s owned this IPad 2 and created a yahoo email just for this iPad and only because she had to. Most iPads we get are beat up pretty badly esp older models but this one looks new. She claims she used it only once or twice and didn't like it and I believe her. It would be a shame if the unit is bricked because of this.
Pretty sure you can just put it into DFU mode, connected to a computer with iTunes, then it prompts you to do a factory reset. I did this with my grandparents ipad cause they forgot their password. It erases everything, but I doubt that's an issue. DFU mode: Plug your device into your computer with a USB cable. Turn off the device. Hold the Power button for 3 seconds. While holding Power, press Home for 10 seconds. Release the Power button but keep holding the Home button. iTunes should then open, then it will tell you there is something connected in recovery mode. It should then give you the option to factory reset it.
I just did it like a couple months ago, when did they change it? Is it an icloud thing that would prevent dfu mode?
If find my iphone/ipad is turned on, after restorinv in dfu mode, it still won't let you set up the device as its locked to someone's account. Google will tell you this, I had this exact issue with a family members ipad that had died, so no password etc to get it removed. I can only think your device just had a pin code or something, not what's being discussed here
It's probably not very likely but can you ask the seller to come to your store again? You can try and reset the password together with the security questions (maybe she remembers) or you can call Apple together and explain the situation. People claim they were successful: http://ipadinsight.com/ipad-tips-tr...-answers-to-your-apple-id-security-questions/ In any case, do not reset via DFU mode or the device will be completely unusable.
If memory serves, you can still get it to work if you recover from dfu mode. But you need to login to the apple website and remove the device from the account that way. But I certainly wouldn't recommend doing it, it's easier to try and log into the account on the device itself (and it can still kinda be used at the moment)
Holy crap it's gotten more complicated. Yeah my grandparents ipad was just the password to get into it, they didn't have icloud setup. Good thing I guess! Sorry for the misinformation, I guess I'm way out of the loop when it comes to this sort of the thing. The last time I really messed around with this was iphone 3GS sorta era =P
To reset an iPad if you forget the password: If said iPad is registered with an iCloud account, it's worthless unless the original owner can remove it from their account. If said iPad is NOT registered with an iCloud account, a DFU reset via iTunes should restore it to factory condition. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204306
