Hi folks I have managed to pick up a HKT-01 Dev kit and very happy I am to!

Here she is in all her beauty:

Anyway, at the moment I don't have a PC to connect it up to but anted to test GDRs and retail games just to be sure it is fully working.

I have had a look at some other threads but can't seem to find any info on what settings to what, so any guidance on what the numbers on the dials represent and also the dip switches please. So to be so dumb but Dev hardware really isn't my speciality.

For those wondering it does have a hard drive and further down the line I might need some help to take a look on it, cheers in advance.

You can set the rotary switch to one of the following values:
    Code:
    0 - Japan
    4 - North America
    6 - Brazil
    7 - Argentina
    9 - Europe

The two leftmost DIP switches can be set as follows (up is on, down is off):
    Code:
    On | On - VGA
    On | Off - RGB
    Off | Off - Composite/S-Video

The rightmost DIP switch can be set to either boot from the flash memory (off) or run a self-check from EPROM (on). In self-check mode, the video is output via VGA.

The slide switch allows you to flash the unit. Left is for normal operation, right is for if you want to flash the unit.

What is it that you're concerned about? Is there no video output or something like that?

    Brilliant thanks.

My biggest concern was that I couldn't get a Japanese retail game to play, had a feeling the laser may be dead. I had video output but kept getting a "please insert disc" message.

With your direction managed to find the right settings so here we are working:

Hi guys starting to think a bit further ahead and how I can view any files on the hard drive.

I could do with some help, so have a few questions:

    1. Am I right in thinking I will need a Adaptec 2940U 50-pin PCI SCSI card installed in a PC and then a cable running between that and the HKT-01?

    2. If so what cable is required?

    3. Is tag the only way to browse any files?

    Thanks

Yes. Be aware of the different card names, too. The 2940U (U = Ultra) uses the HD50 SCSI cable (HD = High Density), whereas the 2940UW (UW = Ultra Wide) uses the HD68 SCSI cable. The 2940UW works just fine, but you will need a cable which has the HD50 connector on one end and HD68 on the other.

Just a regular SCSI HD50 male cable, these are easily found on eBay. You will also need two SCSI terminators if you don't already have them. They connect to the For GD-Writer and SCSI-B ports.

You can use Windows Explorer to browse the files on the development kit, if that's what you mean. If you want to image the drive, you should take the hard drive out and use the SCSI card's internal IDC50 header to connect the hard drive to your computer. You can then use dd, or your operating system's equivalent utility, to image the drive.

I hope that helps you out.

Great, if you have and we can work out a deal that is a bit cheaper than going to ebay then I am your man, shipping might kill it as I am in the UK. Take a look and let me know. Cheers.

Have taken a look around if I get the 2940U (U = Ultra)

Is this the cable I need?

Although on a second look I don't think this is a HD one.

So it's a 50pin connector on the Katana unlike the Adaptec 2940W/2940UW which has a 68 pin connector?

yes and you have such more 50pin mini scsi 2 components for dev as 68pin. Sure you can use a cable with 68pin to 50 pin, but its a lot easier to go for 1:1 stuff. Like when you use a ps1 dev burner you need a scsi 2 centronic 50pin. And than you need to find a scsi2 centronic 50pin to 68pin scsi2 mini ...

Right think I have got my head round this now, gonna pick the card up and the cable.

Next move is to source a PC with Windows 98.

    I'll keep you guys updated.

    Cheers for the help

Yes, that should be the right cable, but:
    - I would ask the seller if it's a male to male cable, his description is not clear
    - 1 meter is too short for me, I prefer 2 or 3 meters (my pc is on the ground, my devkit is on my desk)

Also, unless you have specific reasons, no need to use Windows98, cfr the stickies on this forum:
    http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/how-to-use-the-katana-sdk-on-windows-7.25882/
(... but after inspection, you should know that, since you replied in that thread in 2013 :) )

Valid point will get a longer one.

Good shout with the OS, don't know why o thought it need to be Windows 98, looking at a cheap Windows 7 PC so hope to have an update within the next few weeks.

By the way, I suppose Windows 8 & 10 also work with the replacement dll,
so if you have that on a pc with a PCI slot, I would try that out first :)
    (not that I'd want Windows 8 & 10 myself...)

I haven't... but am planning to do it one day, if nobody else tries first :)
I'm waiting for Kaby Lake (end 2016 / begin 2017?) to upgrade my C2D, so I'll probably test it by then...
It would be nice to be able to choose any motherboard, not only the ones with a pci slot :)
Even better would be a USB2SCSI solution, so that even mini pc would work with a HKT-01...
(all the usb2SCSI cables seem to be too obsolete / expensive)
