I have the kit installed from Maxdiypower and it appears to installed properly, but I have no idea what software I need or how exactly to configure the hard drive. Apparently I need a patched version of HDLoader, but I cannot for the life of me, find it anywhere.

Can someone with some experience explain what I need?

i've formatted the drive using Winhiip, I was previously using it in a phat PS2, but after ive copied games to it, openps2loader just freezes when loading from the HD

Also, i have no idea how you format a drive in ulaunchelf, I see no option for it.

WinHIIP should be ok, though it has a lot of options that may or may not work with OPL. I've only used it to copy stuff, not for partitioning, so I'm not sure about the details. I know formatting with ULE works fine though - it's somewhere under 'HddManager'.

Yeah I figured it out. I also figured out that using the latest version of OPL seems to have solved the problem. I can boot games now, but I need Free Mcboot to do it, which kinda sucks. I was hoping I could use HDD OSD like on the phat PS2 :/

I don't think HDDOSD works on slims, unfortunately. And to save you some time: I couldn't get FreeHDBoot (that FMCB-on-HDD variant) to boot either. Apparently much of the neccesary code is simply not present in the Slim's firmware :( But look on the bright side, the current setup works on whatever PS2 variant you throw at it, so if you ever want to switch models again it's not gonna be a problem.

Oh well... So what setup do you use? Free McBoot?
Modbo 5.0 can launch OPL, maybe that would be quicker than Free McBoot...

No known modchip's boot-loading code will ever load your console's configuration correctly, which means that your browser's settings (i.e. language, aspect ratio etc) won't apply to games that you boot.

What's wrong with using FMCB? If you don't want to see the hacked OSD, you could just set it to automatically boot OPL.

The HDD Browser can probably be made to work on the SCPH-70000 if you make a (cross-regional) FMCB installation and copy the atad.irx and hddload.irx modules from BIEXEC-SYSTEM to your region's respective folder, but DVD video playback will not work because the design of the DVD player in ROM was changed.

Ah I see. I guess I'll stick to FreeMcBoot then. I just don't feel comfortable having my entire setup at the mercy of a single memory card. You know, incase it goes faulty or something. Having the PS2 boot directly to OPL would be handy though. How do I do that?

If you're really that worried about the card's NAND chips failing, then you could just reserve it for FMCB and nothing else. To prevent anything else from using it, you could put another card in slot 1 for storing saves and your play history.

The PlayStation 2 will not boot unlicensed software on its own, so you need some way to do that.
Sorry, but that's just why we need FMCB.

If you want to use your modchip to do that, then you need to refer to its user manual.

Oh yeah I know that, I just don't know to do set that up with FreeMcboot.

You need to start the FMCB Configurator (either from the hacked OSD or by holding START before the FMCB logo is displayed).
There should be an option for E1 launch keys. You just need to change the path for the AUTO row under the E1 launch keys category. Remember to save your configuration.

^ this. FMCB will then automatically start OPL on boot, unless you hold down a(ny) button - useful if you ever want/need to mess w/ FMCB again.
