I recently got an old socket 370 motherboard from a friend and will be using it as in a 3rd computer in the loft for music and media use/storage but there is no name or model on the motherboard.

I want to find out if i can use a 1ghz cpu in it before i put the cpu in just in case i fry anything.

The only information i have is a sticker with what looks like an 8 on it with an extra line which if turned sideways looks like a 0 and 6 joined together, I have searched the web with no luck

i would appreciate if anyone can help out.

Run cpu-Z and see if it recognises it. If not, just take the chipset details which it will always give and google it - if the chipset suports the FSB for the 1GHZ cpu then chances are the board will.
Alternatively just try it - you are very unlikely to actually break anything with a 'Too Fast' processor so long as its the right socket.

right i should make clear that this motherboard is not connected up or anything its just screwed into a case and we need a fan for it which we can get easily enough.
