I was talking with a Japanese friend tonight and she told me I was hentai. I thought she was joking at first but then she said that it actually is a compliment for some. We were talking about horror movies when it came up, nothing sexual, so that's what threw me off.

I always equated the word with sex games and perverted guys. I didn't know it included so many different things. She said she was hentai because she has a replica of the Saw doll. She's going to buy a bicycle for it next...heh.

Isn't this similar to using the term otaku, because although the original meaning is not bad it has a negative connotation and is thus avoided most of the time?
