Sega goes 3rd party and with in 2 years they're in the shitter. But what if by some string of fate Nintendo had to go 3rd party.... Ok discuss kiddies.
As long as Nintendo doesn't start to dish out yearly Mario platformers with more and more story and less gameplay, they would survive. Imagine, Mario Kart on the 360 with Live as an online service: No Friendcodes, Voice Chat, 16 Player Online.
I don't know if they'd survive really. They only release a handful of big titles for the Wii per year, and they wouldn't have an overhyped console they could make some cheap games and siphon off the profits from, or a very successful portable. Even Sega's crap would probably sell better if they had a superhyped console with a massive drought of good software to put it on.
Nintendo couldn't go 3rd party. They only make 3 or so games a year. Most games released by "Nintendo" are not produced in house. Yakumo
Sega has become increasingly reliant on farming out the majority of its post-Dreamcast titles - with Sumo Digital in particular taking up most of the slack, it seems - yet remains popular as a singular entity because of its brand familiarity and continued support of certain franchises (some for better or worse, depending on your opinion). Nintendo could very easily do the same, though it would probably require even less internal reshuffling because many of its best-known titles haven't been developed in-house for a long time. Of course, the gaming world in general would miss Nintendo's consoles as they've recently broken a lot of new ground technically, but few really care about where its latest hits come from because they're always made to follow a high standard of quality. Besides, it has the handheld market virtually wrapped up, so it would be foolish to abandon such a lucrative side of its current business model! While it probably wouldn't make that great a difference, you're correct in saying Nintendo couldn't go third party in a hurry. Still, if the money ever did start drying up (and at the moment, what's the chance of this?) I'm sure management would be closely following Sega's example for proof a once dominant hardware manufacturer can adapt or face risking its survival in any shape or form...
There are a few factors that could happen that might make Nintendo go 3rd party for one thing, if they lost Miyamoto. Though he's been loyal he has been known to have lunch with execs from the other two big ones and he's good friends with Kojima. We also know as he's said it himself, he doesn't make as much many as somebody of his name and caliber would bring. It's not out of the realm of possibility that he could have a falling out with Nintendo.
Nintendo really doesn't put out that many games at all, however if you are speaking of all games developed for Nintendo systems than okay I'll bite. Imagine all your favorate Nintendo titles on Next Gen systems with Next Gen features. IE Starfox for 360/ps3 online. However beyond that Nintendo games really are not that spectacular such as "cooking mama" and titles like such.
Zelda going multi-console would result in mass Nintendo fanboy suicide everywhere....or someone would threaten to blow up Nintendo's HQ....and actually attempt it.
What if my grandmother had balls? would that make her my grandfather? Such are the questions that keep me awake at night, I must be a philosopher.
It is. People don't leave a company they helped create on a whim. The man receives a blank cheque if he so wishes to ask for more salary, but he is not. He is a mature individual who has something you and most people don't, a place in history.
O_O What a nice conversation!! XD It's been a while since such a good topic has been opened imo. Imagination FTW!! ---Now on topic--- I have thought of this matter several times and seeing 2 of the 3 ninty's recent home consoles going down the drain I wouldn't exclude it as an option.. BUT! if this would actually going to happen that would be in the generation after the upcoming one... If ninty fails in the next gen and the other two companies prevail it could be possible that mario and zelda would go multiplatform. Ninty tries to avoid direct competition by trying to be more innovative. But what is ninty gonna do next:/ ? now that both of the other 2 companies are going to stick their noses in the videogame interactivity consept? This answer will be given with the next gen, as soon as we see what nintendo is planning. Originality, though, will not be so easy this time...
Or perhaps it might be a creative difference? Some times I wonder if Miyamoto wants a larger canvas to paint on.
Actually I don't think he's ever constrained in what he does. He's just extremely cautious and orthodox in the manner in which he directs/designs games, adhering to oldschool principles such as gameplay and fun, often completely ignoring the narrative. He's so beloved within Nintendo that they would let him do whatever he decided I suppose, especially considering how Iwata respects him, but it's just Shigeru's nature to be modest.
