Hi everyone.. I've been lurking around for a few months after stumbling on the site after buying a PSP development unit and a silver PSX and a dead Panasonic Q (which is being converted to hold a pc) Now I have a problem identifying a gamecube which is a bit odd.. The other Saturday I went to a carboot sale and there was a guy selling a spice orange gamecube with a gameboy adaptor (in orange) and it came with a number of games (all are UK games). It was on the floor and to the side of his stall, and I have found that if this is the case the seller normally has very little interest in the item/items and normally sells them cheaply. I asked in general about the console (trying to play dumb and trying to hide how happy I was) and he said it play perfectly and that they have had it for a very long time but had spent the last decade in a box in the loft. Asked how much and he said £5, I nearly wet myself. I get home a few hours later and test my finds for the day (phones, consoles etc) and sure enough everything worked. I turned my attention to the GC (saved the best till last) I powered it on.... The menu came up (forgot to put a disc in) But to my surprise it was in English not Japanese. I then remembered to put a disc in and turned it off and on and the game fired up and I could play a game but it was in English. Looked through the box and all the games were PAL including the gameboy adaptor disc. I was a bit confused at this point as I thought the spice orange was never release in the UK. I had to investigate further, so I cracked open the unit. And as normal the screws made that horrible creaking sound and were quite tough to undo. I started to hunt for a mod chip but there was nothing. Nothing attached to the DVD drive or to the motherboardI literally took the unit totally apart and found nothing.. But as it was in bits by now I decided to give it a clean and get rid of the years of dust. Got out some cleaning wipes and thats when I saw the info on the sticker under the console and it read... Nintendo GameCube DOL-001 (EUR) CE Nintendo D-63760 Großostheim Is it possible I have a PAL Spice Orange Console?
Woow, really interesting subject ! Never heard of PAL Spice Gamecubes ! Definetly want to know more about it and hope someone has some answers
Where's the stupidly long piece of paper with a cheat code for Ace Golf slapped to the side of your head?!
Just try if you can get a Picture with a RGB Scart Cable. If yes, its a european GC, the japanese GC has no RGB output. I did same, as an S-Video only GC is not soooo great for me, but still wanted my main GC to be spicy orange . edit: never ever heard about any other versions than the japanese spicy orange, but theres a few orange aftermarket cases around and have seen even a few painted ones.
I wonder if, like the 3DS replacement cases that can be ordered on the actual Nintendo Website, gamecube replacement cases ware available the same way. As 3DS replacement cases can be different to the retail ones, Nintendo may have done the same with Nintendo gamecubes. This may explain the PAL sticker on this Spicy Gamecube. Anyway, would love to buy a such Spicy gamecube !
@Digmac - Nam Rood was a character on Bad Influence!, a UK gaming show. He was there solely to give cheat codes, which he did by slapping them on his head, as you can see. I assume this didn't come in its original box? They had the colour in the UK. They sold the controllers in Australia, but I didn't think the console itself.
Just seen one on Ebay 24,99€ + free european shipping, just missing one of the port covers by description (look for "game cube orange"). I paid even a few more euros when i imported one from japan, but this went all into shipping and console itself was pretty much free . So theres no excuse to not own one .
Holy image size Batman! Five megs per file... Would be nice if you could post sth like this as clickable thumbnails instead, next time, thankyouverymuch. I always thought the Spicy Cubes were a Japan-only thing? Might have them confused with the Spicy GB Players (good luck hunting one of those down for a good price). (edit: scratch that, I'm seeing one for just 28 eurobucks... The controllers though...)
Thanks a bunch for the clarification. I thought it might have something to do with a UK reference. Shows you how much I know
A good point. As Imageshack was used, they have thumbnail links that are more appropriate for a forum. Use those in future. I've converted them to thumbnails (fortunately making it .th.jpg still works with Imageshack).
