Found this on another forum. Video is quite convincing from a former programmer. Fast forward to 15:48 to hear about it. So what do you think about this story? Doesn't matter to me because I had a PC when Half-life was released, but I know all the Mac lovers might've missed out on something so great as this game.
Must have been dissapointing to her and the people who worked on it, not to to mention all the mac users, shattering. Thanks for the video link found it very interesting!
Interesting thanks for the link. Seems such a waste not to have brought it out. then again.....Dreamcast.
It was a waste not to bring either one out methinks. But their must've been reasoning behind why Valve did this. Did they want PC exclusivity until they released the PS2 port (Maybe because they thought the PS2 was the most powerful thing that could do their title justice?) I have yet to play the DC Beta, I am a fan of Half-life, but I honestly have zero urge to play it when I could be mapping for Source. So tell me, compare the the DC version to PS2 version someone. (Already a little unfair due to the DC ver. not being complete, but none the less)
The DC version is pretty much complete. There aren't a lot of differences in terms of visuals, both use the Hi-def pack introduced by Blue Shift. I personally prefer the DC version, I can't explain why but it feels less like a port.
small note that interest me. This person still works in the industry and currently at Ubi Toronto. Hmm I should keep my eyes open if I ever saw her around the city.
When I tried playing the DC version it ran really slow for the most part. Was that because of the version I was playing?
No, basically that's why it never got released. I think there are updated versions with optimal file placement for reading quickly from the disc. The framerate won't really be any better, though, it'll just load marginally better (if it makes any difference at all).
I thought the Dreamcast version was really good, i nearly played it through to completion....I recall the only annoyance was the loading, wasn't concerned by the frame rate.
Half-Life for Dreamcast was 100% complete and ready for production. This includes the complete packaging and manual, actually a few complete packages -without the actual disc- exists. The cancelation was purely a decision of the publisher.
Thanks for sharing that, very interesting stories from her. Never cared much for Macs but I grew up with the Apple IIe which I'll always have a soft spot for.
