    Hey Guys.

You know these Home Cinema systems..

I'm confused. As far as I can see, they are a DVD/Blu ray player with 5.1 speakers and other inputs. From the manuals, I usually see phono inputs or a headphone jack for an MP3.

    However.

My friend has one. His Xbox his hooked to his TV via HDMI only. His home cinema system is alos hooked up via HDMI, but it receives its input from the TV! That is, if he has it set to AUX, it receives all of its audio from the TV regardless of channel. So, he switches his TV from Component, to SCART, to HDMI Xbox, to Tuner- all is brought through the Home Cinema. I had a look at the rear of it a while ago and I do not recall seeing any phono hookups- and he told me its just hooked up to the TV via HDMI only.

How the hell does that work if it is only hooked up via HDMI?

The way it *looks* like is that the Home Cinema System receives it's audio from the TV over HDMI. I just don't get that? Am I missing a trick? I can't find an answer anywhere really that explains what I mean. Unless my friend s totally mistaken.

HDMI is both an audio and a video cable combined (similar to SCART, only with an all-digital signal).

I would guess that the TV is passing the audio of whatever he is watching back to the Home Cinema system. Doesn't surprise me, as I can imagine many systems out there have the capacity to do this.

I never see it advertised though. I have looked at the manuals for these systems and I have never seen this function specified- hence my confusion!

I was thinking it could be the HDMI port being set to output but does a HDMI port allow for it to be used as output rather than input?

I know on my old CRT/DVD combi i've got in my room has a set of separate Composite connections plus a Optical audio connection which is only used for sending the audio and/or video from the inbuilt DVD player to a receiver...etc. Could that be the case here but with a HDMI connection rather than composite?
