Looking at Sickened 88’s pic of his collection (member game collections thread); “Im a collector with no shelves” (nice collection of vintage pieces), got me to thinking about when I first started playing on home consoles. Seeing a boxed Pong system brought back some nostalgic memories of being wowed … that was the first home console I had seen and played … way back then.

I thought this would make an interesting thread … to share your home gaming firsts.

If you would like to share (if applicable):

    • What was the first home console you played?
    • What was the first home console that your household owned?
    • What was the first home console that you purchased?

    I’ll start:

My first home console that I played on was Pong; It was my cousins, I do not recall the model … but I do remember that you could hold the paddles as opposed to having the control knobs on the console itself.

The first home console that our household owned was the Coleco Telstar Arcade system. It was a triangular shaped console that had a steering wheel, light gun and pong like knobs. I believe we had two gaming cartridges, these were triangular in design as well. My brother picked this up from a friend – we got it used. We had a lot of fun with this, eventually it did not get much use as it was eclipsed by the Atari 2600 – that my brother purchased.

The first console that I bought, was a SNES – used off of Yahoo Auctions.

Genesis at my best friend's house, Genesis, and the first one I bought was a Dreamcast at EB Games a little while after they discontinued it, I ended up getting a ton of games at Gamestop for cheap.

For me, the first console I played was the NES, when I was like, 5 years old. The NES was also the first console the house had, as it was my dads. The first console I bought... well, I half-bought a Gamecube with my parents as a christmas present (times were hard, so buying the console myself was too much and my parents couldn't afford it, so I saved up my pocket money that I earned around town(I was around 15)). First console I actually bought myself was a Xbox 360 for Oblivion.

The first console I've ever played was my cousin's commodore 64. Then as a spoiled child my parents bought me all sorts of consoles and game without me paying from the 2600 to ps2. But the first I bought with my own money was the ps3. That is why I love it so much.

I'm not sure about the first one; it was probably a kiosk in a store, either a Genesis or an SNES, but I'm not sure. The first console my "household" owned was a Sega Genesis. "Household" meaning me - it was a Christmas present, and I have no siblings. I think I got it in 1994 or '95. I'm not sure about the third one either. It would've been bought with money I got from my parents and/or relatives. I think it was probably a Playstation, which I got in 1997, I think.

The very first home console I ever played was a Grandstand pong system with various preset games such as hockey, tennis and football (soccer). The very first system I actually owned was a commodore plus 4. It was like a beefed up commodore 16. It wasn't until 1987 when I got my very first console which was a Sega Master System. The Master System was way more popular than the NES in the UK.

Nintendo 64, got it for christmas in 1998. My sister always saw commercials for it and wanted it a lot. Played a kiosk at Toys R Us, and my dad like the animations in Mario Kart 64. So he bought one for us. Was the Australian Exclusive bundle with the Atomic Purple and Grey controller.
Memory is extremely blurry which is why it's not my main answer, however my uncle borrowed a "sega" from someone he knew. I guess it was a mega drive, and I think the game was Virtua Racing.

Nintendo 64, was the first console we had in the house.

The first console I bought with my own money was a PSone, I wanted it since everyone I knew owned a Playstation and modchips were major attraction in the day. Other parents would tell my parents they don't pay for games. My parents really didn't understand that very well, but I bought one with my own money I saved up all year for one, and a modchip. I pretty much only used it for Vigilante 8 2nd Offense and Need for Speed. Oh and I found out I liked girls when I saw Chun-Li in the EX2 Plus, and when I hired Dead or Alive and played as Kasumi hah. That's always a funny story to tell :p

First played - probably a neighbour's Commodore PET 4032, there was a game where you had to swat flies, all ascii stuff of course. Someone at my school had an Intellivision that they actually brought to school a couple of times son we could all see the wonder of video games (can you see this happening now)? I remember playing b-17 bomber on that with the talking cartridge.

First owned was either Atari 2600 or Sinclair Spectrum, I remember having both around 1983, but I can't remember which arrived first. The Spectrum was bought as the family computer, and my parents bought a bunch of non-gaming software for it. Nonetheless it ended up living in my room after a few months, I played games on a 14" black and white Hitachi TV that you tuned with a black line that appered on the screen when you pushed a button. Only recently playing Spectrum games on ZXDS have I realised how little I missed colour whilst gaming back then. The Atari actually got way less use than the Spectrum, though I do remember some pretty epic Dig Dug and Centipede sessions.

First I bought for myself was a Japanese launch Game Boy, I was living in the UK at the time and in the issue of Computer and Video Games (which I read practically from launch) where they announced the Game Boy there was a full page advert from some dodgy-looking grey import company offering the handheld for 125 GBP with Super Mario Land coming at an extra 25 GBP. That was a small fortune back then, but somehow I scraped it together, and for a little while I was able to amaze people with this fantastic little machine, that really was a taste of things to come.

First console I got was an Xbox 360 Pro 20GB. I was 8 years old, but I saved my money and bought it. My parents never ever bought me anything expensive, they wanted me to earn it. Luckily, I had good grades and still do, that's how I get my money. I remember the price, it was 199 Eur. My first game for the console was NFS Carbon limited edition. I played it so much, until I got my console flashed and for a while I pirated games like crazy. Now I appreciate collecting and don't pirate ( as much)

First home console i played? 100% sure it was my brother's Atari 2600, the first console we had at home.

My first console was a Master System, that my parents bought for me. Yakumo, i know the feeling. As everybody knows, the Master System was huge in Brazil.

The first console i bought with my own money was the PlayStation, around 1996.

First home console I had was the Gamecube, a platinum iirc that was purchased around christmas 06. I would eventually get a Wii 6 months later on Father's day of all holidays. The first console I bought might be an N64 that i got for a friend who really wanted one on amazon.

Gah, I think the first console I played on was the N64 (I vividly remember playing Lylat Wars and Ocarina of Time) but I know both my brothers had a PS1 at the same time, so I might have played on those but I don't think so. As for my household, long before I was born I know my Dad had an NES so I suppose that would be the first console the family owned.
It actually gets murkier when it comes to which console I bought first for myself, in the space of a year I bought 8 PS1 units, a Sega Saturn (sadly no longer with us), a Dreamcast, an original Xbox and I believe my PS3. It's safe to say I have no idea what came first, but it was one of those, haha.

Very first system i remember playing was a Spectrum, getting games to even run was very confusing stuff for a 4-5 year old lol

First proper console was a mega drive, it was originally a present for my dad and he loved it too but i played that thing pretty much religiously (He still talks about Revenge Of Shinobi to this day haha). First system i bought with my own money?, i think it was the DC after they stopped making them. Game or Gamesation were selling pre-owned DC's for about £20

I had both of the shenmue games boxed, kinda regret selling them off now (esp Shenmue 2, imagine that could be worth abit today)

The first home consle I ever played and that my household owned was a 2nd generation Sega Genesis (it was my sisters and I was about 3 years old when I started playing video games).

The first home console I ever bought was a Model 1 Sega Saturn (well my parents technically bought it since I couldn't use ebay or paypal at the time but I paid for it with my own money so I guess that counts)

Both my my first console I ever played and owned is the Famicom.

Suprisingly enough, I technically have never bought any console or portable by my "own money" . It's either given to me as a gift or given away. :p

First console we owned was the NES, I remember sitting in there with my dad playing super mario 2 and his reaction when we finally beat it was priceless.

Beyond that I think the first that I bought was the dreamcast, had high hopes for the system but crazy taxi made it all worth it.
