    Hello.

Please forgive my ignorance. I am new to modding and have read tons of resources and done a lot of research but it often becomes overbearing and stressful and conflicting or confusing. So I need some help and clarity.

I am new to modding and have done a few successful mods with various bits of wire I had on hand. Mostly from old computer fans. The wire was great and seemed really high quality. Another was a small length of solid core 30awg "kynar" that came with an N64 RGB board which I managed to install.

I recently made three purchases on eBay to try buy wire and each times the wire was not good. One was like limp spaghetti which makes it almost impossible to solder onto anything, the other was just cheap and brittle and the other was 24awg solid core which was a mistake.

I don't have enough money to keep making purchase mistakes like this.

So a few questions/points which I would love clarity on

    1. What guages/core should I always have in my toolbox?
    2. Is 30awg Kynar wire stranded or solid core?
    3. I get confused when I read tutorials that say "use Kynar wire" and they do not specify anything about the wire. Kynar seems to be used as a generic term for 30awg wire. But isn't Kynar just a type of insulation? The wire can be any gauge?? Have I understood this correctly? Kynar is also a brand so most people selling on eBay would probably not be selling genuine Kynar as is the eBay way?
    4. Do these seem like good purchases for 30awg Wire?

I am yet to find a source for a smaller gauge (larger wire diameter) stranded wire so any links and recommendations for good and cheapish wire will be greatly appreciated.

Some of that can be worded better, but I hope you get the point of this post.

    Many thanks

I use both listed so far. The one you said was too brittle is my favorite and I've never had issues with it other than it's really stiff which is mostly a good thing (real easy to stab yourself with it). What I do know from experience is the non-kynar insulation melts a lot easier where the kynar just kind of burns if you hold it too long. It doesn't really matter, both are good and I use whichever is closest.

You don't need multiple colours, wire is wire regardless of the colour of the insulation.
I'm not really a fan of kynar wire, I prefer to use thin stranded copper wire.

I think I would appreciate having at least few different colours when I do my NESRGB board or some other complex jobs. But yes, not necessary.

Think I need a finer iron tip to achieve anything like that. My standard Hakko tip seemed too big when I did my N64 RGB board.

When I build anything I like using different color wire so I can visually troubleshoot the problem

Chisel tip is fine, just have to get good. I can't remember the last time I used a conical tip.

    Watch this some day:

Glad you liked it. It's better to learn the science behind something rather than just the application of it.
