So I just bought a GBA player. Is the Hori Digital Controller the best option for playing GBA/GB games? These babies are $100+ on eBay and I'm trying to figure out if a controller is really worth that much or if there's a similar, if not better, alternative.
SNES controller adapter? Can't get much closer to the first model GBA, other than using one. FWIW I've never tried either idea I just mentioned.
It's pretty good, but I find the digipad a bit stiff to be honest. Not as smooth as the SNES one and it's larger than the GBA/SP digipads so not really comparable in terms of handling. A very nice alternative to the GC pad though. $110? WTF? That's just fucking nuts. Not sure if you wanna hear this but I have two mint boxed ones and they cost me $10 each Lol. Realistic prices for them might have been 30-40 bucks at the time though, I'd never pay more than 50. Then again the black one is a bit more sought after, I have two purple versions.
lol! $10?? i've been getting into Gamecube stuff lately, just cause it's a fun little system. But between these controllers and the component cables... this little purple box has some expensive accessories! but then like, the Mario DDR dance pad, complete in box, is like $15! xD
I've used both the Hori pad and the adapter, not much difference at all really, apart from the obvious button layout
You want me to be perfectly honest about the Hori pad? I think it SUCKS. Seriously, I just have two of them because they were cheap, are kinda sought after, and they fit well in my collection. But I always played GBA games on the GB-player with my regular GC pad. Admittedly, shooters like Gradius Galaxies were nicer with the Hori pad but it still felt horrible. I think they really messed up the digipad, it feels a bit like the N64's to me and that proves how awful it is. Completely overhyped pad... if something like that exists.
N64 seriously has a different digipad than SNES? I don't recall hearing that one before... It'd be neat to see an N64 vs SNES controller teardown compared.
To be honest, I never played the SNES a lot so I can't even quite recall the digipad. But I really disliked the N64's... I think the GameCube one's wasn't even bad, it's just that they designed it for 3yr old little girls sizewise.
I can't even think of a game off the top of my head where I used the N64's Dpad... I checked out some reviews of the adapters and they seem to work pretty well. So i ordered one of the NES ones. i just need a decent sized Dpad really. isn't the GBA Dpad the same size as the GCN Dpad? @AVE RIP INTERNETS still better than my 2mb/s
I have one of these, not the greatest, not that bad either. $110 ? It's a ripoff. Got 2 new sealed for about $25. P.S. SNES controller adapter FTW.
I'll end up getting one of the SNES controller adapters eventually. I'm mostly gonna be playing Pokémon for a little bit and an NES controller, to me, just feels a little more right for that game... I don't know, maybe I'm dumb. xD
I modded a NES controller to work off the buttons of a Wii Remote, know what you mean about getting the original feel of the games. Another option is a PS1 to Gamecube controller adapter. Yeah I know it means Sony, but there is a HUGE range of controllers including Arcade sticks to try.
This. Just buy a GBA-GCN link cable and a model 1 GBA for cheap and use it for the best/most authentic experience
i bought a bunch of those hori controllers really cheap, i gave most of them away to friends. i had no idea they were worth so much. i liked it better than using the game cube controller or a gba. any other gamecube stuff ridiculously priced?
I don't want to use something else that needs batteries is the thing. I just got all my stuff in the mail, i'm so excited!! Haha
I got the SNES adapter from RetroZone/RetroUSB and it works great. Only gripe is I wish that there was a way to make Y and B equal to B and A for the GBA. It's weird to me to have those 2 buttons on the snes controller used. I liked how the Super Gameboy let you change that. I don't know why the GB Player had to be shitty about it.
