Hello all, first of all I apologize if this has been answered before, or it's in the wrong section. If so please be kind to redirect me to the thread/section. Long story short: I want to buy a japanese PINK slim ps2 ( SCPH-77000 i believe) and all I want to be able to do is play US ps1 and ps2 games. I have searched and learned but can't find a definite answer. I have researched and found about Swap Magic, Free McBoot and Memor 32, but I am *almost* certain that those would only work on a US ps2 to play imported games, and it has to be via a back up or external drive (McBoot and Memor32, and If I am missing something please let me know) Also I read about the Matrix Infinity mod chip which I understand takes the region lock away. But I don't know where to get it and would prefer a solution that doesn't involve opening the ps2 and soldering. Researching I found this site and thought maybe someone would be able to help me out. Thanks in advance to everyone who reads.
If its the first model slim (with the thin glossy black stripe) then you should be able to install freemcboot on it and from there I know there is a way you can run import games. I'm sorry if my post was not very specific but I installed freemcboot years ago and kind of forgot the how to do it. EDIT: Freemcboot is a hack that is installed on the memory card and every time the ps2 is turned on with the memory card inserted you will get an alternate screen after booting.
I think it's an older model, but not sure how old, I know its a SCPH-77000 , it's the japanese PINK color ps2 slim model. And thank you for helping out.
Those pinkies are able to run FMCB just fine, they're all 7700x models (the European ones too), and everything below 9xxxx works. But mind you: FMCB doesn't run foreign-region discs. You can work around it by burning a region-patched copy and using that, but imported originals are a no-go. Also, no PS1 imports/backups whatsoever afaik (unless you block the lid sensors and do some disc swapping). Swap Magic also needs blocked sensors and swapping (well, duh!) so you might just as well go with FMCB. Don't know jack about that Memor32 thing so can't comment on that... If you can get a chip installed, that's definitely the best option imho.
Sounds like the chip would be the best bet. Do you know by any chance where I could buy it? Also finding someone that can install it will be a struggle... I live in San Diego, California. Thanks for your answer.
The Chinese still sell Matrix/Modbo clones, but I have no idea how well they work (you shouldn't ever try updating them, for example...). Try asking around (post a WTB on the marketplace forum), if you find someone that knows how to mod a PS2 he might have some old chips left.
Also in another forum they informed me of the modbo 4.0 chip, which is a newer version of the infinty chip, I guess that makes it even better. And they even gave me a link to buy it: http://www.modchipcentral.com/store/modbo-4.0.html
