I was wondering how difficult it would be to change the red power on LED on the N64 to a green one. No real reason, except I tend to associate red with off, and green is my favourite colour, so I think it would be a nice change. The problem is, I'm almost completely new to soldering, so far all I've done is add an external reset switch to an N64:

and I know nothing about electrical components. Logically, I'd imagine all I have to do is to remove the red LED, and replace it with a green LED, but I know nothing about LEDs, are they all interchangeable, or (since things are never simple) do they have different power requirements or tolerances, etc, which means I'd have to use a specific type of green LED? If so, then as well as telling me which sort of green LED, then if possible can you tell me it's Maplin' serial number (I'm in England, with a Maplins (electrical component retailers) nearby).

Also, how do you remove the red LED? I take it you just heat up the solder with the soldering iron, and pull out the red LED? But I see people using the word 'desolder', so does that mean 're-heat the solder and remove the item (LED or whatever), or is there a separate tool to do this?

Finally, would it be possible to replace the red LED with both a green LED and a Blue LED, or would that drain more power then the N64 would allow to the power on LED? I probably wouldn't do that anyway, but I am curious.

Thanks for reading, and please make any answers easy to understand, as I know next to nothing about it.

Yes. Just heat up the two legs of the red led, pull it out, stick the green in (in the same orientation as the red one, leds have a + and - leg) and all will be working just fine.
